NigeriaThe second of Sunday’s semi finals in the Africa Cup of Nations sees Algeria clash with Nigeria and in what looks a tricky game to call we look for a speculative interest in the betting markets.

Algeria booked their semi final berth with a penalty shoot out win over Ivory Coast in the quarter finals on Thursday. Sofiane Feghouli opened the scoring for the Algerians in the first half but they missed an opportunity to double the lead from the penalty spot after the break and Ivory Coast made them pay with an equalizer just after the hour. There was no further scoring in regulation time, or the extra 30 minutes and it was Algeria who held their nerve in the shoot out.

In the Round of 16 Algeria had too much for Guinea, coming through with a 3-0 win and prior to that they topped Group C ahead of Senegal with Kenya and Tanzania missing out. Algeria started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Kenya before coming out on top of a key clash with Senegal by a 1-0 scoreline. They only needed a draw in their final group match against Tanzania to secure top spot but they left nothing to chance in coasting to a 3-0 victory.

The goal conceded against Ivory Coast in the quarter finals is the only time the Algerian defence has been breached in this tournament and ahead of semi finals day they can be backed at around 24/10 to kick on and lift the trophy.

William Troost-Ekong struck in the closing minutes of Nigeria’s quarter final clash with Bafana to seal a 2-1 win. Samuel Chukwueze had given the Super Eagles a first half lead but Bafana fought back and the game had looked to heading for extra time.

In the Round of 16 Nigeria fought back from 2-1 down at half time to beat Cameroon 3-2 with Igahalo scoring twice.

In the group stage Nigeria finished as runners up to Madagascar with a record of 2 wins and 1 defeat. They were denied top spot after going down 2-0 to Madagascar in their final group match. The Super Eagles won their first 2 matches against Burundi and Guinea by a 1-0 scoreline.

The Super Eagles are currently trading at around 3.75/1 to win the tournament.

Recent Head to Head

The most recent meetings between the teams came in regional qualifying for World Cup 2018. Nigeria were 3-1 winners on home soil in November 2016 and 12 months later the return in Algeria finished all square at 1-1.

Algeria have arguably been the most impressive side remaining in the tournament but they have 1 day fewer than the Super Eagles to recover from their quarter final which went the full distance. IT looks a tricky game to call and I’ll offer no more than a speculative play on Algeria to lead at half time and Nigeria to fight back in the second to take the game into extra time.
