AFCONgeneralSenegal and Algeria will contest the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo on Friday, these teams also met in the group stage earlier in the tournament and it was Algeria who came out on top, will it be any different this time around?

Senegal:

Senegal came through their semi final with a 1-0 win over Tunisia. The game finished without a goal in regulation time although both sides missed from the penalty spot and an own goal in the 101st minute saw Senegal go through.

In the quarter finals Idrissa Gueye struck in the 70th minute to give Senegal a 1-0 win over Benin and it was a similar story in the Round of 16 where they beat Uganda by the minimum margin with Sadio Mane scoring the only goal of the game early on.

Senegal had finished as runners up to Algeria in Group B with a record of 2 wins and 1 defeat. They started with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tanzania before a 1-0 defeat to Algeria left them with work to do against Kenya in their final group match. It was 0-0 at half time in the Kenya clash but Senegal cut loose after the break to win 3-0 with Mane scoring twice.

Senegal have kept 5 clean sheets in 6 outings, conceding just the 1 goal so far. Backers of both teams to score? (no) have collected in all 6 of their games but they will have to cope without the services of their star defender Kalidou Koulibaly who is suspended for this final.

Senegal are bidding for their first AFCON title. Their only previous appearance in the final came in 2002 when they lost a penalty shoot out to Cameroon after a 0-0 draw.

Algeria

A 95th minute goal from Riyad Mahrez saw Algeria beat Nigeria 2-1 in the semi finals. Mahrez curled in a superb free kick to put Algeria through after the Super Eagles had cancelled out a first half own goal which had seen Algeria go into the break 1-0 to the good.

In earlier knockout rounds Algeria held their nerve to see off Ivory Coast in a penalty shoot out. They also led that game 1-0 at the break and missed a penalty early in the second half before Ivory Coast fought back to level things up at 1-1 and there was no further scoring. In the Round of 16 Algeria had too much for Guinea, coming through with a 3-0 win.

Algeria had topped Group C ahead of Senegal with Kenya and Tanzania missing out. They started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Kenya before getting the better of Senegal by a 1-0 scoreline. They only needed a draw in their final group match against Tanzania to secure top spot but they left nothing to chance in coasting to a 3-0 victory.

Algeria have found the net in all of their matches so far and they have conceded just twice.

This will be Algeria’s first appearance in an AFCON final since they won the 1990 edition of the tournament as hosts, beating Nigeria 1-0 in the final. A decade earlier they finished as runners up after losing 3-0 to the Super Eagles who hosted the tournament on that occasion.

Recent Head to Head

When the teams met in the group stage of this tournament Youcef Belaili scored the only goal of the game in the 49th minute to give Algeria victory.

The teams also met in the group stage of the 2017 AFCON finals and they played out a 2-2 draw. Senegal topped that group before losing 1-0 to Cameroon in the first knockout round whilst Algeria failed to progress.

In the group stage of the 2015 finals Algeria came out on top with a 2-0 victory.

Verdict:

Senegal have kept things tight but the absence of Koulibaly is a big blow and after edging their way through earlier knockout rounds they face a tougher test here.

For me Algeria have played the best football in the tournament and whilst fatigue is a concern for what is a very settled unit, I would make them favourites. It’s likely that Algeria will have huge support in the stadium and I will give them the vote to lift the trophy via any method of victory (90 minutes, extra time or penalty kicks).

Suggested Bet:

Algeria to lift the trophy at 9/10
