A 70th minute goal from Idrissa Gueye gave Senegal a 1-0 win over Benin in the quarter finals and heading into the semi’s they are now favourites to go on and lift the trophy, trading at around 13/10. Senegal were value for the quarter final win and it was a similar story in the Round of 16 where they beat Uganda by the minimum margin with Sadio Mane scoring the only goal of the game early on.

Senegal had finished as runners up to Algeria in Group B with a record of 2 wins and 1 defeat. They started with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tanzania before a 1-0 defeat to Algeria left them with work to do against Kenya in their final group match. It was 0-0 at half time in the Kenya clash but Senegal cut loose after the break to win 3-0 with Mane scoring twice.

Senegal have kept 4 clean sheets in 5 outings, conceding just the 1 goal so far. Backers of both teams to score? (no) have collected in all 5 of their games.

Tunisia ended Madagascar’s dream run to the quarter finals with a 3-0 victory on Thursday night. It was 0-0 at half time but goals from Sassi, Msakni and Sliti gave Tunisia the win against a side who had been the surprise package of the tournament.

That was Tunisia’s first victory of the tournament in regulation time. Their Round of 16 clash with Ghana went the full distance, finishing locked up at 1-1 in 90 minutes and after extra time failed to produce a goal Tunisia were foot perfect from the penalty spot.

Tunisia failed to register a win in finishing as runners up to Mali in their group. They drew all 3 matches against Angola (1-1), Mali (1-1) and most disappointingly Mauritania (0-0)

Heading into the semi finals Tunisia are the outsiders of the 4 remaining nations in the betting to be crowned champions and they can be backed at around 53/10.

Recent Head to Head

The teams met in the group stage of the 2017 finals and Senegal won 2-0. Both nations subsequently made it out of that group but exited the tournament at the first knockout stage.

Senegal have had a reasonably favourable route through the earlier knockout rounds where a single goal was enough to see them through in both games. They now face a Tunisia side who look to have staying power and who will probably look to their penalty shoot out win over Ghana as the blueprint for approaching this semi final.

I can see this one going to extra time.
