NigeriaCoping with disappointment is now the name of the game for Tunisia and Nigeria who contest the Africa Cup of Nations third place play off on Wednesday.

Tunisia came into their semi final match up with Senegal as the underdogs on Sunday and they bowed out, losing 1-0 after with Bronn the unlucky man to put through his own net in extra time. Ferjani Sassi had missed the opportunity to give Tunisia the lead from the penalty spot in regulation time although Senegal also failed from 12 yards. Tunisia now contest the third place play off for the first time since 2000 when they lost to Bafana on penalty kicks.

In the earlier knockout rounds Tunisia ended Madagascar’s dream run to the quarter finals with a 3-0 victory. Their Round of 16 clash with Ghana went the full distance, finishing locked up at 1-1 in 90 minutes and after extra time failed to produce a goal Tunisia were foot perfect from the penalty spot.

Tunisia had failed to register a win in the group stage, finishing as runners up to Mali after playing out draws against Angola (1-1), Mali (1-1) and Mauritania (0-0)

There was late heartbreak for the Super Eagles in their semi final match up with Algeria on Sunday as a Riyad Mahrez special deep into injury time saw them go down 2-1. Nigeria trailed at half time after Troost-Ekong scored an own goal but Ighalo levelled things up from the penalty spot on 72 minutes and the game looked to be heading for extra time when Mahrez struck.

In the quarter finals it was Nigeria who scored late to knock out Bafana Bafana with a 2-1 win whilst in the Round of 16 Nigeria fought back from 2-1 down at half time to beat Cameroon 3-2.

In the group stage Nigeria finished as runners up to Madagascar with a record of 2 wins and 1 defeat. They were denied top spot after going down 2-0 to Madagascar in their final group match. The Super Eagles won their first 2 matches against Burundi and Guinea by a 1-0 scoreline.

Nigeria are no strangers to the third place play off and they have a formidable record having claimed the bronze medal 7 times, most recently in in 2010.

Recent Head to Head

The most recent meeting between the teams came in the AFCON finals of 2016 when a group stage match finished all square at 1-1.

In 2009 twoWorld Cup qualifiers were also drawn, 0-0 in Tunisia and 2-2 in Nigeria.

In the AFCON 2006 quarter finals Nigeria advanced on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw and in 2004 it was Tunisia who prevailed in a penalty shoot in the semi finals and they went on to lift the trophy.

Nigeria have an extraordinary record in the third place play off whilst Tunisia haven’t been this deep in the AFCON finals since they were winners in 2004 and one would imagine they will be keen to attain the highest possible finishing place.

As the match result betting suggests it looks a tricky call so on the face of it a penalty shoot out could be a runner although only 1 of the last 9 third place play offs has gone to spot kicks.

I’ll take my chances with the team’s goings into half time all square.
