AFCON trophySome big guns are in Africa Cup of Nations action on Sunday, Nigeria clash with Equatorial Guinea in Group A whilst in Group B Egypt take on Mozambique and Ghana meet Cape Verde

Before we begin those punters who enjoy a price boost will be interested in BoyleSports AFCON specials and one example is “Both Teams to Score in all Sunday's AFCON games has been boosted 11.90 to 13.90”.

Nigeria 0.43/1 Draw 11/4 Equatorial Guinea 56/10

This is a Group A clash with Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau who play in the tournament opener 24 hours earlier being the other nations in this quartet. Nigeria qualified with a record of 5 wins and 1 defeat whilst Equatorial Guinea came through their group with a record of 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat to finish as runners up to Tunisia on points difference.

In 2021 the Super Eagles won all 3 of the group matches, the pick of which came against Egypt but they went out in the Round of 16, losing 1-0 to Tunisia.

Equatorial Guinea won 2 and lost 1 of their group matches in the previous AFCON finals to finish as runners up in their group and they bowed out in the Ro16 losing to Mali on spot kicks.

Nigeria are priced at around 94/10 to win the tournament with BoyleSports

Equatorial Guinea are priced at around 100/1 to win the tournament with BoyleSports

Verdict:

Nigeria's most recent friendly saw them go down 2-0 to Guinea and this doesn't look like the strongest of Super Eagles squads to me. Meanwhile Equatorial Guinea's squad is an unknown quantity to me although their more recent results tell of tale of low scoring games.

I'll speculate we go into half time locked up at 0-0

Bet: Half time result 0-0 at 1.45/1 with BoyleSports

Egypt 1 / 3 Draw 33/10 Mozambique 67/10

This is the first match in Group B and Egypt cruised through qualifying with 5 wins and 1 defeat whilst Mozambique booked their ticket after finishing as runners up to Senegal.

Egypt won 2 and lost 1 of their group matches in the previous finals. In the knockout rounds they beat Ivory Coast on spot kicks, then edged past Morocco 2-1 in extra time. In the semi finals they beat hosts Cameroon in a penalty shoot out after a 0-0 draw and the final against Senegal also went without a goal but this time Egypt lost the penalty shoot out and finished as runners up.

Mozambique were not involved in the previous finals in Cameroon.

Egypt are priced at around 86/10 to win the tournament with BoyleSports

Mozambique are priced at around 240/1 to win the tournament with BoyleSports

Verdict:

Mo Salah is the headline act in the Egypt squad which also has a strong core of locally based players and one would expect them to have too much for their Mozambique counterparts.

On paper Mozambique are the nation most likely to battle in this group and I fancy Egypt will get off to a flyer and win by 2 goals or more

Bet: Handicap Egypt -1.5 at 1.07/1 with BoyleSports

Ghana 15/20 Draw 2.15/1 Cape Verde 33/10

The second of the Group B matches and Ghana came through qualifying unbeaten with 3 wins and 3 draws to top their group ahead of Angola whilst Cape Verde were runners up to Burkina Faso with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats.

In the 2021 AFCON Ghana were a huge let down, taking just 1 point in finishing bottom of a group that included Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.

Cape Verde made it to the knockout rounds of the 2021 finals as a best third placed finisher and they lost 2-0 to Senegal in the Ro16.

Ghana are priced at around 13.5/1 to win the tournament with BoyleSports

Cape Verde are priced at around 100/1 to win the tournament with BoyleSports

Verdict:

Ghana have a squad containing many players who ply their trade across Europe whilst Cape Verde hunt far and wide for players who qualify to represent them and they probably shouldn't be underestimated.

There is some pressure on Ghana after what happened in the Cameroon finals, they certainly have the players to get the job done but recent results don't make great reading.

I'll chance my arm with a low scorer and at least 1 side failing to register a goal.
