Chelsea vs. Spurs, EPL Round 23, 23 January 2022 18:30

After giving up their half-time lead in Brighton on Tuesday night the Blues all but ended their title hopes when they walked away from the clash with only one point. With 12 points between themselves and league-leaders City it seems highly unlikely that they will be able to make up the difference bar a miracle and they now shift their focus to ensuring that they finish in the Top 4 for a Champions League spot. Heading into the New Year it was always going to be a difficult task catching City but failing to pick up a win in all three of their clashes so far this year has made the Blues their own worst enemy.

Earlier in the season Chelsea had a watertight defense that was very hard to crack and it seems unthinkable that they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five league matches and have only kept one clean sheet in their last 11 league matches. On top of that their attack has only managed to score two or more goals in two of their last seven league matches after at one stage being the top-scoring team in the league that would regularly net at least two or more goals per match. There are still seven points separating Tuchel’s men from West Ham in fourth spot, but after giving up points in their last four matches it could only be a matter of time before they find themselves out of the Top 4 if they continue in the manner that they have been. It’s vital that the Blues tighten up their defense and put in a repeat of their first leg performance against Spurs in the EFL Cup so that they can get their first league win of the New Year and end their slump.

Spurs were finally able to face Leicester on Wednesday night after their match had been postponed back in December due to Covid. Steven Bergwijn was the hero after scoring a double in stoppage time to give his side a 3-2 win in a match that had largely been dominated by the hosts. They earned themselves a valuable three points in their battle for a spot in Europe next season and now sit just one point behind West Ham in fifth place with 36 points. Despite experiencing major disappointment earlier this month after being eliminated from the EFL Cup by the Blues, Spurs have still had a really good run in the league since Antonio Conte has taken over as manager. The Italian is still to lose his first EPL match as Spurs’ manager and in the nine EPL matches he has been in charge he has picked up six wins.

Ten goals in Spurs’ last five EPL matches is another indication that he has been a valuable acquisition for the club and he has taken the team from the bottom half of the table to knocking on the door of the Top 4. A win on Sunday could send them into the Top 4 for the first time this season and with three postponed matches to still make up there are plenty of more points available for Tottenham. A bit of a worry for Spurs is that they have conceded in four of their last six away league matches and if this trend continues for their trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday they might just be in for a repeat of their EFL Cup clash a couple of weeks ago.

The stats don’t look great for Spurs going into this clash. In addition to losing both of their EFL Cup legs to Chelsea this month they have also lost four out of their last five EPL matches against the Blues. Wins are very rare for Tottenham at Stamford Bridge and the last time they managed to pick up three points was back in the 2017/18 season which was their first win at the venue in 28 years! Three out of the last five league clashes have seen fewer than 2.5 goals, while both teams have scored only once in the last five league encounters.

Prediction

The fact that Spurs have picked up only one league win at Stamford Bridge in over 30 years along with the fact that they lost both legs of their EFL Cup semi-final makes it very easy to back the Blues to win this match. However, I just have a feeling that Spurs might be able to get something out of this clash and I don’t believe it’s going to be an easy win for Tuchel’s men. Chelsea has been very unconvincing in their recent league clashes and I believe Spurs are playing much better football at the moment when disregarding their EFL Cup performances. They are still unbeaten in the league under the leadership of Conte and with Chelsea playing to a draw in three of their last four league matches I think there is a good chance we could see another draw on Sunday.

I am willing to have a crack at Spurs on the double chance which is available at over even money, while I also like the look of Under 2.5 goals since I reckon we will be in for a close match that will feature few goals. The Blues’ attack feels a bit weak to me right now after having scored only one goal in their last three matches across all leagues and if this continues against Spurs we should be in for a low-scoring game. After a slow first half of the season Harry Kane has now found the net in four of his last five EPL appearances and with a price close to 3.00 on offer for him to score in the match I am willing to have a nibble.
