Manchester City are faced with a Spanish challenge in the Champions League Quarter Finals as they take on Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City
The Citizens have been in a high-flying form in this season`s Champions League. The Round of 16 was a breeze for the Manchester side as they ended the tie before even going to the second leg - beating Sporting 5-0 and drawing 0-0 in the second leg. However, they have showed vulnerability in their backline – conceding 10 goals so far in the 2021/2022 UCL campaign which Atletico will definitely look to exploit. Riyad Mahrez has established himself as Man City`s top scorer in this season`s UCL, so I would be backing him to get himself onto the scoresheet on Tuesday.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico has put on an impressive performance in the Round of 16 against Manchester United – a clash that was a big threat to their campaign. Their draw did not get any easier as they now find themselves facing the blue and stronger side of Manchester. The Madrid outfit are currently playing in an impressive form with no losses in their last 8 matches across all competitions and have players such as Joao Felix, Angel Correa, and Luis Suarez who all can have an impact on this challenging match. They have also shown impressive defensive play against the Red Devils and are most likely to adapt a similar approach against the Citizens and try to catch them on the counters. This will be tough for the Spaniards, but they should not be ruled out of the tie just yet.
Verdict
Both sides have been playing in exceptional form in both of the respective league and European campaigns. Atletico have shown that they are not in the knockout stages by a mistake, and I do see this quarter final being a true test of Manchester City`s big-game abilities.
Atletico displayed great defensive structure in their past games and although the Citizens might not run all over the Madrid side, they are certainly the favorites to end the night off victorious.
