Villarreal vs Liverpool Preview: 3rd of May, 21:00

Liverpool will be looking to build on their first-leg advantage as they travel to the La Ceramica, Villarreal on Tuesday night!

Villarreal

Villarreal were under constant pressure at Anfield during their first-leg clash last week. The Submarines managed to hold on to a clean sheet during the first half and as previewed gave Liverpool a slight challenge in breaking the yellow brick wall down. However, proceedings escalated very quickly going into the second half as a deflection off Pervis Estupiñán gave Liverpool the advantage and within just 2 minutes Sadio Mane netted Liverpool`s second goal.

The mid-week loss did not spark a response within Villarreal`s camp as they lost 2-1 to Deportivo Alaves over the weekend. The Submarines have now lost 2 consecutive games across all competitions and trying to find a come-back against a seemingly unstoppable Liverpool side is looking like a highly unlikely outcome. Needing goals, Villarreal are most likely going to commit to going all out to make up for the deficit, which will only give Liverpool more opportunities to capitalize on.

Liverpool

There seems to be no end to Liverpool`s prosperous form. The Reds bombarded Villarreal`s defence for the full 90 minutes and now have a comfortable lead going to Spain. Their chase for the domestic title continued over the weekend as a goal from Naby Keïta secured their 1-0 victory over an in-form Newcastle outfit. Mo Salah found himself on the bench at Newcastle upon Tyne, substituting Sadio Mane in the 69th minute, suggesting both of Liverpool`s superstars will have fresh legs on Tuesday night. Liverpool have won all of their 5 away games in the 2021/2022 Champions League campaign, scoring at least 2 goals in the respective games. Overall, there is very little that suggests Liverpool will slip up in Villarreal and their dominant display last weekend sets the tone for the type of performance we are most likely to see on Tuesday night.

Verdict

Home-ground advantage can give the Yellow Submarines a confidence boost going into the second leg of the Champions League semi finals, however, after another defeat over the weekend and with Liverpool`s impressive run of form continuing, it is very difficult to see Villarreal pulling off a comeback.
