Nations League: Wales vs Netherlands Preview, 9 June 20:45

Nations League action continues on Thursday night as Wales and Netherlands clash heads in Cardiff!

Wales

Wales resume their Nations League campaign off after securing their spot in the Qatar World Cup beating Ukraine in a 1-0 victory. Rob Page pushed Wales through to their first World Cup in 64 years and the Welsh side will certainly be looking to return to the jubilant Cardiff City Stadium crowd on Wednesday night. Going into the Nations League, the Welsh manager will sit with somewhat of a headache trying to balance the team fitness and deliver the necessary results over 3 games taking place within just a 6 day period, namely facing Netherlands twice and Belgium in between.

The Dragons did not have a successful start to their group campaign losing 2-1 to Robert Lewandowski`s Poland which marked their first loss in 10 games across all competitions. Additionally, the Welsh side are unbeaten in 19 successive matches on their own turf. However, although their form seems to be on the positive side of the scale, they are coming up against a flying Netherlands side and the prospect of juggling players to preserve fitness for the next fixtures will certainly be a difficult task for the Welsh outfit.

Netherlands

Netherlands could not have had a better start to their Nations League campaign. Louis van Gaal`s side dismantled Belgium in a 4-1 victory and keep in mind were the underdogs going to Brussels. Memphis Depay was certainly the focal point of the night as the Dutch striker bagged himself a brace, while Steven Bergwijn and Denzel Dumfries also added their name to the scoresheet. Denzel Dumfries and Dailey Blind were the edge Louis van Gaal needed on the night as both of the wing-backs were involved in the goals with Daley Blind bagging himself 2 assists.

Additionally, the Dutchmen have now gone 10 games across all competitions without a loss and have scored a total of 31 goals in those games. Overall it seems like Louis van Gaal has found the right approach to gel this talent-packed side together with a right balance of attack and defence. Taking these factors into account, it is difficult to see Netherlands leaving Cardiff without all 3 points on Wednesday night.

Verdict

Both sides are playing in respectable forms and have their qualities. However, Wales are just starting to feel the pressure of playing at the top levels of the Nations League and have not delivered convincing and dominant performances in their respective victories. Netherlands have an impressive amount of talent in all areas of the game and seem almost untouchable at the moment, hence why they are the favourites to secure another 3 points on the night.
