SUPER RUGBY AOTEAROA: Outright Views

It’s finally back! New Zealand are the first to re-introduce rugby union and Super Rugby Aotearoa kicks off on Saturday morning. Whilst rugby viewers in New Zealand are gearing up to pack out the stadiums for the opening round there is no lack of interest from this side of the pond either.

For Aotearoa there are few different rule tweaks such as a player being replaced after 20 minutes with a red card, golden point extra time has been introduced and referees will also be encouraged to police the breakdown more harshly to encourage more attractive, attacking rugby.

Let’s be honest here - it’s great seeing rugby return and adjusted rules are interesting. BUT punters must be gagging for a proper bet on a quality, live sporting product and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I can’t wait for this tournament to kick off. Often punters believe long term bets are mostly lucky blind guesses but personally I believe it’s about spotting some value in the market. Here is where I see some long-term value for Aotearoa with my friends at BETOLIMP.

Top Highlanders Tryscorer – Ash Dixon @ 8.00

Right out the gate I’m sticking with my hookers. Dixon made a habit of getting in the boot of the maul for Hawke’s Bay. In a shortish tournament and playing for a team hardly fancied of challenging for top honours a handful of tries should prove enough to be very much in the running.

Top Chiefs Tryscorer – Brad Weber @ 10.00

Few scrumhalves in world rugby have the try-scoring appetite of Weber. His eye for a gap combined with his insane pace means visits beyond the white line is nothing foreign for this nuggety nine.

Top Hurricanes Tryscorer – Dane Coles @ 20.00

Yes, another hooker slips into the preview. The veteran All Black is sure to feature heavily for a less experienced Canes side than has often been the case recently. The mobile number 2 has no trouble finding his way to the chalk.

To Finish Bottom – Hurricanes @ 6.00

Yes, there is still some quality in the Hurricane squad in the form of Ardie Savea, Ngani Laumape, Jordie Barrett, TJ Perenara and Coles. But having lost coach Plumm as well as Beauden Barrett the team doesn’t quite have a settled feel to it. The Highlanders have a good chance of winning the wooden spoon, but the value lies with the men from Wellington.

Top Tournament Tryscorer – Rieko Ioane @ 8.00

With the attacking flair of Beauden Barrett and Dan Carter around, and with word doing the rounds that he has come out of lockdown in incredible shape, Rieko Ioane should be primed for a superb tournament. Get on board this bus.

Top Tournament Point Scorer – Damian McKenzie @ 5.00

After a disastrous 2019 due to injury D-Mac will be chomping at the bit to pack all his skill and dynamic energy into a condensed 2020 campaign. If his deadly boot is tuned in McKenzie has a great chance of ending the tournament as the top point scorer.
