SUPER RUGBY AU ROUND 1

Following in the footprints of the Kiwi’s, the Australians have finally rolled out their version of Super Rugby as well. Interestingly enough the men from Down Under have introduced some new rules (unlike Aotearoa). Tactical kicking will be the main point to look out for as there is not the possibility of winning the ball back if you can accurate exit your own half.

Reds vs Waratahs – Friday 03 July @ 11:05, Suncorp Stadium Brisbane

Before the COVID break the Reds weren’t that much better off than the Waratahs but it was clear to see that the men from Sydney were struggling badly. The Reds pushed the Lions, Brumbies and Crusaders all to the end in narrow losses whist the Waratahs suffered some big defeats.

Team News

Looking at the two teams it is clear to see that this is a new era in Australian rugby at present. Michael Hooper and Rod Simmons are there to add some experienced grunt to the Tahs but gone are the Wallaby stars in the form of men like Foley, Folau, Beale, Adam Ashley-Cooper, etc. There is however the exciting Mark Nawaqanitawase to watch out for on the left wing for the visitors.

The Reds have also lost some quality and will rely heavily on James O’Connor to live up to his billing if they are to take this match, and this competition, by the scruff of the neck. Look out for Brendon Paenga-Amosa and Taniela Tupou who are two young Wallabies who have bright futures ahead of them in the tight five. The 20-year-old Harry Wilson will need lead the charge from number 8 as well.

Tactics

It will be interesting to see how both teams adapt to the new laws. Neither side have experienced half-back pairings who standout as game generals capable of dictating terms apart maybe from O’Connor when he is at his absolute best. The Waratahs will hope a change in personnel as well as the long break serves to improve their mental approach to the game as this is often where they have been sorely lacking. The Reds have no such hang-ups as they are just a bunch of excited youngsters happy to “give it a go”.

Verdict

The Reds are at home and just have a touch more shine to their squad. Brad Thorne has also shown that he knows how to get the best out of these youngsters so they should be able to start the campaign off with a win, but by how much remains the big question.

Brumbies vs Rebels – Saturday 04 July @ 11:15, GIO Stadium Canberra

The two tournament favourites meet early in the competition to determine who will carry the “favourites” tag into Week two of the Rugby AU tournament. During the first phase of Super Rugby the Brumbies were second on the overall log with five wins from six matches whilst the Rebels were in 6th having won the half of their six.

Team News

Looking at the two sides the Brumbies boast a Wallaby front row and other key players such as Pete Samo and Tevita Kuridrani. The Rebels will rely on some experienced backline stars in the form of Matt To’omua, Billy Meakes, Reece Hodge, Dan Haylett-Petty and the powerful Marika Koroibete.

Verdict

That Melbourne backline looks the business with the tactical expertise of To’omua to capitalise on the new rules as well as the power of Koroibete to call on out wide. Yet it is the home ground advantage and that strong front row that has me leaning toward the Brumbies in some way, shape or form.
