MITRE 10 – Round 2

With Super Rugby Aotearoa grabbing the attention of the greater rugby public recently New Zealand rugby still firmly holds the attention of more than just the Kiwi supporters. The Super Rugby players have returned to their Provinces and this means tantalizing battles for pride and bragging rights. And this time around I’m looking to get involved with my pocket as well…

Here are a few matches that catch my eye in Week 2 of the Mitre 10 Cup in New Zealand.

Waikato vs North Harbour – Saturday 19 Sept @ 04:05, Waikato

The Waikato men put fifty points on a star-studded Wellington side last week. The centre combo of Anton-Lienert Brown and Quinn Tupaea will keep any defence honest. The presence of Luke Jacobson and Samisoni Taukeiaho gives the pack some Super Rugby steel as well. And then there’s the small matter of Damian McKenzie ready to cause havoc out the back.

North Harbour are an honest outfit who proved this point in the opening round when they refused to let Canterbury walk over them. The likes of Dillon Hunt will have to front up again this week if they are to give the home side a go.

I have plenty of healthy respect for Harbour but can’t see this dangerous Waikato side being kept in check in afternoon footie across the ditch.

Canterbury vs Taranaki – Saturday 19 Sept @ 06:35, Christchurch

This promises to be a belter of a game. The Canterbury side looks like a Crusaders outfit but the Naki are not to be taken lightly with the Barrett brothers in attendance. The big question is whether the visitors will be able to front up in the battle upfront. Ben May and Riccitelli are Hurricane stalwarts and if you add the industrial Lachlan Boshier you get a very competitive Taranaki outfit. Oh, and did I mention that the Ranfurly Shield is also up for grabs in this one… I expect Taranaki to keep things tidy in what should be a good attacking game of rugby.

Auckland vs Wellington – Sunday 20 Sept @ 06:35, Eden Park

If we thought the Canterbury match had a number of Super Rugby stars, it’s nothing compared to this mouth-watering cash at Eden Park on Sunday. Wellington will roll out a proper Hurricane squad. Look out for All Blacks Asafo Aumua, TJ Perenara and the returning Julian Savea. Not that the Blues have to take a step back by any means as Tu’ungafasi and Rieko Ioane look to make it a battle of the AB’s yet. Yet the most appealing clash is surely going to be amongst the loosies where Akira and Hoskins Sotutu clash with Vaea Fafita, Du’Plessis Kirifi and Ardie Savea – wow!
