Let’s take a look at the weekend fixtures for Round 6 of the NRL.

GOLD COAST TITANS vs ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS – Sat 20 June @ 07:00, Suncorp Stadium

The Story thus far

After breaking their duck in Round 4 against the Tigers it was back to “normal” for the Titans as they were comfortably out performed by the Bunnies last week. The Dragons will be one of the few opponents the Gold Coast side will be targeting but the same can be said for the visitors. Having finally turned their fortunes around against the Sharks, Paul McGregor will want his chargers to turn the long time between drinks into something resembling happy hour at Suncorp on Saturday.

Verdict

It could prove tough for the Dragons to just leave their troublesome past behind them in one short week but there are just more dangermen in this Dragons side and I reckon they will continue their upswing in Brisbane.

WEST TIGERS vs NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS – Sat 20 June @ 09:30, Campbelltown Stadium

The Story thus far

It’s a middle of the table clash as the Tigers host the Cowboys. Both teams have shown glimpses of impressive form yet over the past fortnight the Cowboys have slumped to defeats at the hands of Cronulla as well the Warriors. The Tigers were tripped up by the Titans and the Raiders in this same period.

Key for the clash

Both teams have had their setbacks and now need to stop the slide and start moving up the ladder rather than down. With Valentine Holmes out the Queenslanders struggled for spark in their attack whilst big JT wasn’t at his devastating best. Adam Doueihi will do well to replicate his form from Round 5 in the number one jumper for the Tigers.

Verdict

I’ve stuck by the Cowboys over the past few weeks but it is finally time to just ship. No Val Holmes, no Cowboys for this punter.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS vs PARRAMATTA EELS – Sat 20 June @ 11:35, Bankwest Stadium

The Story thus far

Ironically the Eels will face the Premiers in this “away” game at their very own stadium – spitting distance from their team headquarters in Parramatta. This Saturday evening clash promises to be the match of Round 6. The Eels are five from five at this stage and well fancied to go all the way in 2020. To prove their title challenging credentials they will however need to beat the defending champions who are slowly but surely starting to find their mojo.

Key for the clash

The Eels appear to have most if their bases covered. In Mitch Moses they have a halfback who can dictate terms and outside him there is the potency of Waqa Blake, Maika Sivo and Blake Ferguson. Their forward are also not shy of rolling up their sleeves. Whilst Parramatta are sitting pretty in pole position they have had their moments of weakness though – in the opening round they barely managed to crawl over the line against a poor Bulldogs outfit, Manly will still be smarting at the forward pass that wasn’t in Round 4 and last week the Eels were pointless and trailing the Panthers at the hour mark. All of those aspects will have the rejuvenated Rooster expecting to topple the table-toppers.

Verdict

The Eels are a serious team but this Roosters side is starting to fire on all cylinders and I don’t see the Parramatta side being able to stay with them.

CANBERRA RAIDERS vs MANLY SEA EAGLES – Sun 21 June @ 07:05, Campbelltown Stadium

The Story thus far

The most impressive display from the Raiders came in their third-round victory over Melbourne. Apart from a slip-up against the dangerous Knights, Canberra have kept their noses clean and looked a well-rounded team. Manly are one of the most exciting sides in the competition when they get going. Against the Broncos they only switched on in the second stint but were dominant in that second forty when they did eventually wake up.

Key for the clash

Sixth on the log, the Sea Eagles are starting to fall out of favour in the betting but its tough seeing why. As long as Tommy Turbo is around these birds have all the chance in the world of soaring. The Raiders have one of the toughest sixes in the NRL in the form of Jack Wighton but are perhaps overly reliant on Nicoll-Klokstad for attacking spark.

Verdict

Pragmatic meets daring at Campbelltown. With no home advantage for the Raiders one has to feel the Sea Eagles offer some value in what should be a coin toss.

CRONULLA SHARKS vs CANTERBURY BULLDOGS – Sun 21 June @ 10:30, Bankwest Stadium

The Story thus far

It’s a basement battle for the last match of the weekend. Neither side has impressed in 2020 and labelling anyone a “favourite” in this one is using the term very loosely.

Verdict

They might be up against arguably the worst team in the comp but I just can’t part with any money by backing the struggling Sharks.
