Let’s take a look at the weekend fixtures for Round 4 of the NRL.

PARRAMATTA EELS vs MANLY SEA EAGLES – Sat 06 June @ 09:30, Bankwest Stadium

The Story thus far

After stuttering in Round 1 the Eels are now humming after two convincing victories, the most impressive being their Round 3 roggering of the Broncos. The Sea Eagles have themselves been impressive and after proving their defensive powers in earlier rounds they opened the attacking taps this past weekend against the Bulldogs.

Key for the clash

Manly are all about playing an attractive brand of footy led in no small part by Tom Trbojevic. Yet their defense has been equally strong. For Parramatta it will be a case of asking for more of the same from the likes of Mitch Moses and Dylan Brown looking to unlock the Sea Eagles.

Verdict

Having disposed of the Broncos in such convincing fashion one can understand the optimism around the Eels yet I think they will be properly tested by an in-from Manly team. Oppose Tommy Turbo and his troops at your peril…

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS vs CRONULLA SHARKS – Sat 06 June @ 11:35, Queensland Country Bank Stadium

The Story thus far

The Sharks were the unlucky, plucky losers in the opening two rounds but the wheels came off completely for Cronulla when they were fancied to handle the Tigers but ended up getting their fingers burnt. The Cowboys finally found their attacking flow against the lowly Titans but need to transfer that type of performance against stronger opposition.

Key for the clash

The North Queenslanders have lost their big ball carrier Jason Taumalolo but it will take something significant for the Sharks to find their bite after the negativities surrounding the camp at present as well as their disappointing belly-up performance last week.

Verdict

Not even the inspirational Wade Graham’s never-say-die efforts will be enough to lift his team mates against the likes of Val Holmes and Scott Drinkwater who seem to be finding their very best form.

CANBERRA RAIDERS vs NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS – Sun 07 June @ 08:05, Campbelltown Stadium

The Story thus far

The Raiders are the new undisputed favourites with the bookmakers and it’s hard to argue. The Canberra side hardly blew the Titans or Warriors away but put in a classy showing against the fancied Storm at the last time of asking. Newcastle kept their unbeaten start going by refusing to throw in the towel against the Tigers.

Key for the clash

The Raiders having only conceded a miserly one try per game in the opening trio of matches. The Knights have shown they have plenty of fight in them and crucially they welcome back influential fullback Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce is also available despite last week’s knock. Whilst the Raiders have impressed defensively the Knights have showcased their sparkling attack with 11 tries thus far.

Verdict

These Newcastle Knights have shown they have some bottle in them and this result might not be quite as cut-and-dry as many seem to expect.

GOLD COAST TITANS vs WEST TIGERS – Sun 07 June @ 09:30, Suncorp Stadium

The Story thus far

The Titans have lots by 18, 40 and 30 in their first three encounters, managing only one try per game. The Tigers suffered defeat to the Knights in Round 2 but have delivered some good attacking rugby with 13 visits over the whitewash.

Key for the clash

Anthony Don will return from the bench for the Gold Coast side but it will take more than one man to stop Benji Marshall and his troops from pouncing on their next victim.

Verdict

The Tigers seem to have found their attacking flair whilst the Titans have been dismal. I’m expecting the Tigers to have too much attacking weaponry for the Titans to handle.

CANTERBURY BULLDOGS vs ST GOERGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS – Mon 08 June @ 08:05, Bankwest Stadium

The Story thus far

We have a basement battle at Bankwest for this Monday match. The Dragons showed glimpses of promise in the opening two rounds but hit rock bottom by not being able to get on the scoreboard against the Warriors last week. The Bulldogs have proven dogged in their determination, but their attacking potency has proven rather dire.

Verdict

Surely the Dragons can’t be as bad as they were in Round 3?! Personally I see this as potentially a rather ugly scrap to try and claw a desperate victory.
