Man City

Aguero missed a penalty in the first leg in Spurs’ new stadium last week and City paid the price when Son’s late goal gave Spurs a 1-0 win. That was City’s second defeat in this competition this season, a campaign which started with a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon in the group stage. A 2-2 draw in the return with the French side is the only other UCL game City have failed to win.

In the previous round City came through their tie with Schalke with a 10-2 aggregate win. They were reduced to 10 men in the first leg and trailed 2-1 in Germany before late goals saw them take a 3-2 lead back to Manchester. The second leg was as one sided as it gets as City scored 7 unanswered goals. Earlier home matches in the group stage saw City thrash Shakhtar 6-0 and they also beat Hoffenheim 2-1.

In the English Premier League City won 3-1 away at Crystal Palace on Sunday and they remain second, 2 points behind Liverpool but they do have a game in hand. They have already banked the League Cup this season and they will take on Watford in the FA Cup final so they need to turn this tie around to keep their dream of a quadruple trophy haul alive.

It wasn’t all good news for Spurs in the first leg with a serious looking injury to Harry Kane threatening to keep him out for the rest of the season.

In the previous round Spurs completed a 4-0 aggregate win over Dortmund. They took control of the tie with a 3-0 win at Wembley in the first leg and followed up with a 1-0 victory in the return.

Spurs finished as runners up to Barcelona in Group B, just pipping Inter to qualification with PSV the also rans. They struggled away from home, relinquishing leads in a 2-1 defeat at Inter and a 2-2 draw away at PSV. At that stage they looked to be heading out of the competition but they recovered to win back to back home games against PSV and Inter before a 1-1 draw at Barcelona on Matchday 6 proved enough to see them sneak into second spot.

Spurs were 4-0 winners at home to Huddersfield at the weekend and they are in third place in the English Premier League. However it’s very tight with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United also in the mix for 2 remaining places top 4 places.

Top Scorers (UCL Only)

Aguero has scored 5 goals for City in this season’s Champions League, Jesus and Sane have 4 and Daivd Silva and Bernado Silva both have 3.

Harry Kane has scored 5 goals in this season’s Champions League for Spurs and no other player has more than 2.

Recent Head to Head

Aside from the first leg the teams met in the Premier League towards the end of October, it was a home game for Spurs staged on a terrible surface at Wembley and City won it 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Mahrez

These teams will meet again at this ground in the Premier League at the weekend and the earlier head to heads this season have been surprisingly low scoring. I fancy that could change here and despite Harry Kane’s injury I reckon Spurs can contribute to the scoring.
