Man United

United qualified for the knockout rounds prior to Jose Mourinho’s departure from Old Trafford. They finished as runners up to Juventus in Group H and 2 of their 3 wins came home and away against Young Boys whilst other matches at Old Trafford saw them draw 0-0 with Valenicia and lose 1-0 to Juve. They did take revenge on Juventus later in the group stage with a 2-1 victory in Turin, their stand out result in the tournament so far.

In the Premier League United’s charge towards securing a top 4 finish has seen them win 8 and draw 1 of their last 9 in the league and they have also made progress in the FA Cup.

PSG

PSG came though a highly competitive Group C, finishing 2 points clear of Liverpool with Napoli missing out from a qualification race which went right to the wire. In terms of form lines the 2 meetings with Liverpool are of most relevance and PSG lost 3-2 at Anfield on Matchday 1 before completing a 2-1 home victory over Klopp’s side on Matchday 5. They had to settle for a point home and away to Napoli and although they put a combined total of 10 goals past Red Star and finished top scorers in the group stage, PSG didn’t keep a clean sheet in the group stage.

PSG have never made it beyond the quarter final stage in the Champions League format but although their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 came to an end recently they have won 19, drawn 2 and lost just the once and have a double digit lead at the top of the standings.

Top Scorers (UCL Only)

Pogba is leading scorer for United in this competition with 2 goals.

Neymar (who has been injured recently) has scored 5 goals in this season’s Champions League for PSG and Mbappe has 3.

Verdict:

This is one of a number of cracking match ups in the Round of 16 and this first leg should tell us plenty as to whether United are capable of transferring domestic form into this competition against one of Europe’s current big hitters.

In the group stage PSG came close to getting a point at Anfield and they finished all square in crunch meetings with Napoli. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this first leg finish all square.
