CWC England150Punters are licking their lips at the sheer volume of betting opportunities for the ICC Cricket World Cup and in this preview we look at some of the alternative outright markets including the team and player to hit the most sixes and whether or not we will see an innings of more than 500 runs.

Player to hit the most sixes

This market catches my imagination for a small and speculative outright bet which will hopefully maintain an interest deep into the tournament.

It’s not surprising to see Chris Gayle at the top of the board but I’d be inclined to look elsewhere. I can see Gayle scoring big runs during the tournament and if that proves to be correct you can expect a number of those runs will comprise of maximums. However how deep the Windies will go in the tournament is debatable as is Gayle’s participation in all 9 of their round robin fixtures. Another West Indian Andre Russell might be a better bet even though he comes in down the order. His six hitting in the recent IPL was sensational and although he comes in down the order he is a finisher of note.

Host nation England are favourites in the outright winner market and their opening pair of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are bound to attract interest as will Jos Buttler. They look hard to separate but I’m leaning slightly towards Bairstow.

India’s Virat Kohli will likely be up at the top of the tournament run scorer chart but I don’t see him matching some of the bigger hitters from other nations or even teammates such as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan.

David Warner looks the Australian’s best hope whilst Martin Guptill and Colin Munro who will likely open for New Zealand are both six hitters of note. As for the Proteas Quinton de Kock looks the most likely of the top order.

I’m going to go with Bairstow as a speculative pick in a competitive but entertaining market.

Any Team To Score 500+ In A Single Innings

A quick google of the highest ODI innings threw up England’s 481 against Australia in Nottingham in June 2018. The next highest was England’s 444 against Pakistan at the same ground in 2016. Trent Bridge is known as a high scoring deck and will host 5 matches in the round robin stage including England v Pakistan and Australia’s games against Windies and Bangladesh.

I would also expect good batting decks at the majority of the venues and whilst an innings total of 500+ would be a record breaking achievement, a nibble the 9/1 could be worth an interest. The race for semi final places might even come down to net run rate and in the later round robin matches a bowling attack could be taken to pieces.

Team to Score Most Sixes.

Whilst the above bets are more of a recreational nature, I do like England strongly when it comes to the team to hit the most sixes. With Buttler, Roy, Bairstow, Morgan and Stokes in the ranks they ought to be right up there when it comes to clearing the ropes. Furthermore I’m not sure England’s bowling unit will keep the lid on their opponents so when the hosts chase they could be decent targets which would help the cause.

West Indies have to come into the equation given their appetite for entertaining whilst I see Australia, India and South Africa as more of accumulators of biggish totals rather than chief destroyers.
