cricket.proteast20150The first T20 between South Africa and Sri Lanka takes place at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday and we take a look at the squads, recent form, head to head statistics and the betting.

 

 

 

This tour started with a 2 match test series and South Africa were short priced favourites to win both contests. Sri Lanka hadn’t read the script, taking the first test by 1 wicket in Durban and following up with an 8 wicket win in Port Elizabeth.

A 5 match ODI series followed and the boot was on the other foot with the Proteas completing a 5-0 clean sweep which included a 41 run victory at Newlands on Saturday, a game which was cut short following a floodlight failure.

 

We now move on to the T20’s series which comprises of 3 matches with this one followed by Friday’s game at Centurion and Sunday’s match in Johannesburg. .

Recent Form

The Proteas were 2-1 winners at home to Pakistan in early February. They won the first match at Newlands by 6 runs and the second in Johannesburg by 7 runs before Pakistan claimed the dead rubber with a 27 run victory at Centurion. In November 2018 South Africa won a one off contest in Australia by 21 runs.

Sri Lanka lost a one off contest to New Zealand in Auckland in February by 35 runs. In October 2018 they lost another one off game in England by 30 runs but in August they won the only T20 at home to the Proteas by 3 runs.

 

The Venue, Newlands, Cape Town

The Proteas have won 4 and lost 6 of their T20 internationals at Newlands.

The most recent T20 in Cape Town saw the Proteas post 192/6 against Pakistan last month (Reeza Hendricks 74, Faf du Plessis 78) and Pakistan came up just 6 runs short in the chase.

 

Heat to Head

Overall the teams have met 10 times with South Africa winning 5 and Sri Lanka winning 5.

On South African soil the Proteas have won 1 and Sri Lanka 2 (a 3 match series in January 2017).

The aforementioned meeting in Colombo in August was a low scoring affair with the Proteas bowled out for just 98 and Sri Lanka scraped home by 3 wickets.

Verdict:

When you look at the squads the Proteas have included some of their more experienced campaigners for the first match only and although we are now in the more unpredictable of the formats, the home sides dominance in the ODI’s is hard to get away from.
