slodiThe fifth and final One Day International between South Africa and Sri Lanka takes place at Newlands on Saturday and the Proteas are on the verge of a clean sweep.

South Africa made it 4-0 with a 6 wicket win in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, bowling Sri Lanka out for 189 in 39.2 overs and reaching that target with more than 17 overs to spare.

This series had started in Johannesburg where the Proteas won by 8 wickets and they followed up in the second contest at Centurion by 113 runs. The third match was staged in Durban and despite losing some overs to rain the victory margin was 71 runs (DLS).

The writing looked to be on the wall for Sri Lanka as the teams made their way to Port Elizabeth for Wednesday’s match and that’s how it turned out. But for the efforts of number 9 bat Isuru Udana who made 78, Sri Lanka’s total (of 189) would have been reduced significantly. Even then the target was never going to be enough and Quinton de Kock made another 50 and Faf du Plessis made 43 before the returning JP Duminy and David Miller then took South Africa home.

This was how the teams lined up at St. Georges Park on Wednesday

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (c), Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Anrich Nortje, JP Duminy,  Dale Steyn,  Tabraiz Shamsi,

Sri Lanka:  Lasith Malinga (c), Kusal Mendis, Thisara Perera, Oshada Fernando, Avishka Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Isuru Udana, Kamindu Mendis, Upul Tharanga, Dhananjaya de Silva, Priyamal Perera

The Proteas have won 6 and lost 3 of their 9 ODI’s at Newlands over the last decade.

The most recent ODI on this ground came in January this year against Pakistan and South Africa won by 7 wickets. Batting first Pakistan made 240/8 and the Proteas chased it down with 10 overs to spare with de Kock making 83. Faf du Plessis and van der Dussen were both unbeaten on 50 at the end.

Head to Head

Overall the teams have met 75 times in this format with South Africa winning 42 to Sri Lanka’s 31 with 1 tie and 1 no result.

With home advantage 32 meetings have seen South Africa win 24, Sri Lanka 7 and there has been 1 tie.

Verdict:

For a bet we look to Aiden Markram as top SA bat. Although he made only 29 on Wednesday in his first action of the series, Markram had been in sensational form for the Titans in this format including an amazing knock against the Cobras on this ground.
