The pick of the fixtures in Round 5 of Currie Cup rugby sees the Golden Lions host Western Province in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon and the home side look set to start as slight favourites.
Golden Lions v Western Province, Saturday 15th September, Johannesburg, Kick Off 15:00
Weather Forecast: - Johannesburg
Referee: Jaco Peyper
Assistant referees: Stephan Geldenhuys, Griffin Colby
Television match official: Willie Vos
The Lions made it 3 wins from 3 outings with a more than comfortable 47-14 victory over the Free State Cheetahs in Joburg last week. The margin of victory was pretty much in line with what the pre-match handicap had suggested it should be and the Lions finished the round at the top of the log, ahead of the Sharks on points difference. The Lions began with a 62-41 home win over the Griquas and followed up by edging out the Blue Bulls 38-35 in a thrilling contest at Loftus.
This is the Lions final home game of the regular season and they have this game and subsequent visits to the Sharks and Pumas to follow.
In 2017 the Lions lost to Western Province in the semi finals at Newlands.
Lions Remaining Fixtures:
22 September Sharks (Durban)
12 October Pumas (Nelspruit)

Province were on a bye last week and they have played just the 2 matches so far. Both ended in victory, most recently a 57-28 hiding of the Pumas in Nelspruit in Round 3. Province had begun their defence of the Currie Cup with a 32-0 win over the Cheetahs in Cape Town in heavy rain and they have a full house of log points with games in hand on all the other teams.
WP have been worth following on the handicap in both their matches so far and victory here would put them in a really strong position with 2 home games still to come before a visit to the Bulls.
Western Province Remaining Fixtures:
22 September Griquas (Cape Town)
29 September Sharks (Cape Town)
13 October Blue Bulls (Pretoria)

When you look at the head to head results home advantage has been huge when these sides meet and we haven’t seen that many nailbiting contests in the previous 3 seasons. Whilst I will stop short of predicting that trend of home wins will end here I do see this being close and I will go for no more than 7 points in it either way with the draw also running for me.
Bet: 3.5 units, Either team wins by 7 or Less (incl. Draw) 29/20 Sunbet
