saints1718After causing one of the shocks of the season in the previous round of the FA Cup Wigan take aim at Southampton in the first of Sunday’s quarter finals.

Wigan saw off Manchester City 1-0 in the previous round, the latest in a series of fairytale wins over City in this competition. Prior to that they had also knocked out 2 other top flight sides. In Round 3 the were drawn away to Bournemouth, it ended in a 2-2 draw and they finished the job at home with a 3-0 victory and in Round 4 they were 2-0 winners at home to an under strength West Ham side.

Wigan’s cup run has seen them lose ground in the race for automatic promotion from League 1 but they have games in hand on the two teams above them.

Southampton parted company with coach Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday and at the time of writing they were reportedly in talks with Mark Hughes to take over. Their cup run started with a 1-0 win away at Championship side Fulham in Round 3 and they followed up with a 1-0 home win over fellow Premier League side Watford in Round 4. A 2-1 victory at West Brom saw the Saints through to the last 8 but its Premier League form which persuaded the board that a change of coach was necessary.

The Saints are hovering just above the relegation zone with just 1 win in their last 17 league outings and given the circumstances of having a relegation battle on their hands, they have done well to get this far.

I think we will see a decent game and Southampton’s players may respond positively to a change in coach. The visitors will need to be on top of their game to avoid defeat but I doubt they would welcome a replay given their predicament in the Premier League standings.

I fancy a couple of goals at least and 2-3 in total is again the pick.

Bet: Total goals 2-3 at 19/20
