Newcastle v Spurs

Match Result Betting

Newcastle 11/4, Draw 5/2, Spurs 11/10

Saturday’s early kick off sees Newcastle take on Spurs. These teams also met on the opening weekend of last season at St. James Park and Spurs ran out 2-0 winners whilst the return in London saw Spurs win 1-0.

Newcastle’s pre-season has been dominated by frustrations from fans and coach about the lack of funds available for strengthening the squad. This was also the case to some degree last season but Newcastle kept their heads well above water to finish in mid table.

Spurs finished third last season, 4 points behind Manchester United and 23 shy of Manchester City and they won 10 of their 19 road trips. Their main pre-season activity came in the International Champions Cup where they beat Italian sides Roma (4-1) and AC Milan (1-0) either side of a 2-2 draw with Barcelona where Spurs lost the subsequent penalty shoot out.

Spurs have had a quiet transfer window and we will have to wait and see if they are at full strength after some players were given extended breaks following the World Cup. I fancy they might still have enough to win this against a Newcastle side who’s supporters are at odds with the clubs owner.

Bet: Away win at 11/10

Fulham v Crystal Palace

Match Result Betting

Fulham 15/10, Draw 47/20, Palace 19/10

Fulham are back in the top flight for the first time since 2013/14 and they haven’t been shy in opening up the cheque book to bring in new recruits. Andre Schurrle [Borussia Dortmund] Loan, Fabri [Besiktas] Undisclosed, Maxime le Marchand [Nice] Undisclosed, Jean Michael Seri [Nice] Undisclosed, Aleksandar Mitrovic [Newcastle United] Undisclosed, Alfie Mawson [Swansea City] £20m

Palace had a disastrous start to last season before Roy Hodgson came in and improved their fortunes and they eventually finished eleventh. That was a terrific return considering they looked like relegation fodder at one time and Hodgson now has a full season to make sure they don’t have to battle their way out of trouble. Palace have held on to their more valuable assets whilst Cheikhou Kouyate has arrived from West Ham.

A London derby on the opening weekend and it looks winnable for Fulham even though Palace now have much more stability than they did this time 12 months ago. Gut feel is for the home win although it is a speculative play.

Bet: Home win at 15/10

Wolves v Everton

Match Result Betting

Wolves 13/10, Draw 23/10, Everton 23/10

Wolves have announced their return to the top flight with a barrage of signings. Adama Traore [Middlesbrough] £18m, Rui Patricio [Sporting Lisbon] Free, Raul Jimenez [Benfica] Loan, Willy Boly [Porto] £10m, Jonny Castro Otto [Atletico Madrid] Loan and Joao Moutinho [Monaco] £5m are among the reinforcements, a real sign of ambition from the clubs owners.

Everton finished eighth last season, recovering from a poor start when Sam Allardyce came in on a short term appointment. Richarlison [Watford] £35m and Lucas Digne [Barcelona] £18m arrive and Rooney has departed for the MLS. Improvement in away form is a must this time around with Everton winning just 3 times on their travels last season. Mario Silva is the new coach but he has seen his side lose 5 pre-season friendly matches in a row.

Wolves should be good to watch this season and if the new arrivals are ready to do themselves justice they could be a real handful here. However my preference is for both sides to find the net in what should be a very watchable game.

Bet: Both teams to score? (yes) at 17/20
