spurs1819Just days after they met in the Champions League Manchester City host Spurs again on Saturday and this time vital English Premier League points are at stake.

Man City

City were 4-3 winners at home to Spurs in the Champions League on Wednesday but they had lost the first leg 1-0 and hence were knocked out on the away goals rule. They are still in the running for a clean sweep of domestic trophies having already banked the League Cup and they will meet Watford in the FA Cup final at the end of the season.

As far as the title race is concerned City are 2 points behind Liverpool (who visit Cardiff on Sunday) and the Manchester side have a game in hand.

City have won 16 and lost 1 of their 17 home games, 14 of which have gone over 2.5 goals. When hosting top 6 sides this season City have beaten Manchester United (3-1), Liverpool (2-1), Arsenal (3-1) and Chelsea (6-0).

Spurs

Spurs will be in dreamland after Wednesday’s result but they must now refocus on the league with the aim of securing a top 4 finish. Coming into the weekend they were in third place but the gap to sixth placed Manchester United was just 3 points.

Away from home this season Spurs have won 11 and lost 6 and their last 4 Premier League away fixtures have ended in defeat. When visiting top 6 sides Spurs won 3-0 at Manchester United, they lost 4-2 at Arsenal and 2-0 at Chelsea and more recently went down 2-1 at Liverpool. Backers of over 2.5 goals have collected in 12 of 17 Spurs road trips.

Top Scorers

Aguero is leading scorer for City with 19 league goals, Sterling has 17 and Sane 9

Harry Kane (injured) has scored 17 league goals for Spurs and Son has 12 and Lucas 10.

Head to Head

In the Champions League quarter finals over the course of the last 10 days or so Aguero missed a penalty in the first leg in London, Son’s late goal gave Spurs a 1-0 win and Harry Kane picked up an injury which could end his season.

The real fireworks came in the second leg in Manchester on Wednesday night. It was 2-2 after just 11 minutes and City scored again on 21 minutes and went into half time 3-2 up. When City made it 4-2 just before the hour they were ahead on aggregate but Llorente pulled one back on 77 minutes and Spurs were back in front on the away goals rule. We had VAR involved and drama all the way to the final whistle where Spurs held on to set up a semi final clash with Ajax.

The first Premier League meeting this season took place in October, it was a home game for Spurs staged on a terrible surface at Wembley and City won it 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Mahrez.

Verdict:

That was classic match in midweek and the respective coaches now have the task of getting their players focused on this league game. City still have to go to Old Trafford and Liverpool show no signs of tripping up so City have little margin for error.

City rarely fail to score in Manchester but Spurs proved they can find the net without Harry Kane and I reckon they will contribute to the scoring again here.
