southampton1819Our featured FA Cup fifth round tie on Wednesday comes from St Mary's where Southampton host West Ham in an open looking betting heat.

Southampton

Southampton are in good shape and bidding to go one better than last season when they were beaten semi finalists in this competition. They have sailed pretty close to the wind in the previous two rounds, with extra time needed to see off Championship opponents. They were 3-2 winners away to Swansea in Round 3 (1-1 90 mins) and in Round 4 they beat Coventry 2-1 in a home fixture (also 1-1 90 mins).

Premier League form is encouraging with the Saints now in the top half of the table on the back of a run of just 1 defeat in their last 10 . In their last 5 they have beaten Norwich and Everton (at home) and Spurs away whilst taking points from another home fixture against Manchester City and a visit to Manchester United.

Southampton can be backed at around 28/1 to win the FA Cup this season.

West Ham

West Ham survived a huge scare away to non league Kidderminster in the previous round. They were 1-0 down on 19 minutes and their equalizer came in injury time and the winner in the 121st minute. A third round clash at home to Leeds was more straight forward as West Ham came through with a 2-0 win.

West Ham are currently fifth in the EPL standings, 2 points behind fourth placed Manchester United. They were 1-0 winners at home to Wolves at the weekend and now take on Southampton for the first time this season after 2020/21 league fixtures between the sides finished 0-0 at St Marys and the Saints won 3-2 in London.

West Ham can be backed at around 13/1 to win the FA Cup this season.

The Betting:

Southampton are currently 29/20 to win the game with the draw at 24/10 and West Ham can be backed at 39/20

A game of 3 goals or more is priced at 15/20 and it's 6/10 for both teams to score.

Southampton are 8/10 to go through via any method and West Ham are 11/10

The Verdict:

This has the makings of a good contest and it's a difficult one to call. Of the odds in the match result market the draw in 90 minutes makes the most appeal, especially given both teams have needed extra time in the earlier rounds.

I'm also including a speculative play on the home side to score first and the game to finish all square in regulation time.

Bet: 90 minutes result, draw at 24/10

Matchflow Home teams scores first and draw at 13/2
