Brent Graham’s Open Championship Betting Preview and Picks

The fourth and final major of the year takes place at the Royal Portrush Course in Northern Ireland from Thursday this week and we pick 4 players to take on the bookmakers.

Royal Portrush is a par 71 links layout which hasn’t been used as a venue for this Tournament for close on 70 years.

While we have the likes of Mcilroy and Koepka trading at the top of the betting boards, if you take those 2 out it does look a wide open event and there certainly looks to be merit in including some bigger prices.

Links golf tends to test every aspect of a player’s game and aside from just being long off the tee he needs to be able to scramble and show imagination around the greens.

Here are my selections for this week all at Betxchange who offer a Top 3 and Tie promotion for win bets placed before the Tournament. If your pick finishes second or third including ties you get your stake refunded. Full T and C’s on the Betxchange website.

Selections:

2 Units Rory Mcilroy win at 9/1

It has been some time now since Mcilroy won a major championship, but he has shown some good form in recent months and if he can handle pressure will be a big runner. Sounds strange to talk about a golfer like Rory having to handle the pressure, but he has shown a tendency to struggle under pressure of late and I think back to the US Masters where he was looking to complete the Career Slam and he had a poor Tournament. His game is certainly suited to links golf and I think his cherry ripe and ready to win this.

1 Unit each way Henrik Stenson at 30/1

Stenson turned in an almost perfect display of golf when he edged out Phil Mickelson to win The Open Championship a few years back. He has never quite reached the heights that I thought he would when I first saw him win at Sun City many years back, but his game is perfectly suited to this course and he has been flushing his iron shots of late and just needs to drop a few putts.

0.5 Units each way Patrick Reed each way at 120/1

Reeds game hasn’t been at its best since he won the US Masters and he spent sometime in the doldrums which explains his 120/1 price. He is good at getting up and down around the greens though and his game has certainly shown signs that he could be coming to hand. At a treble figure quote I am more than happy to have an each way interest in him this week.

0.5 units each way Erik van Rooyen at 140/1

Van Rooyen faded out last week in Scotland, but overall he has had an excellent year and he is another whose game is suited by links golf. There are a couple of other South Africans who are vying for my betting interest, but I think Van Rooyen represents the best value this week
