The lack of a pace is a slight worry in this event but the first selection RAHVAR can turn things on smartly and he is deserved of his next career victory. The bay gelding has achieved all three of his wins over this distance and he stayed on over further in a similar field on the polytrack two weeks ago. The Cape visitor ANNIGONI is better than his recent form indicates and he is capable with frontr- unning tactics. His last formline was boosted when his conqueror The Slade and runner-up Our Emperor were subsequent winners eight days ago.

Race 7: CAPTAIN ALFREDO(1)

The day's topliner is another extremely intriguing affair as the pace should be close to the inside rail where CAPTAIN ALFREDO and EXELERO can fight out the exacta. The pacey former is better than his recent formline indicates and he should strip fitter after perhaps just needing his comeback effort. He prefers this minimum distance despite placing in the Merchants at Kenilworth in early December. It is worth noting that the latter was soundly thrashed in the same event almost one year ago but he is better than that. The veteran gelding has his seasonal and local debut today and should still be high- ly competitive from his favourable draw.

BUTTERFLY SPIRIT expectedly bounced back to best on returning to the grass recently. She was pipped in the last stride by her stablemate Lady Diddeo and had the speedy NIGHT AT THE PROMS 1.75 lengths further adrift. The first selection was raised three pounds for her exertions but is only 1.5kgs worse off with the latter and can still confirm the formline. The latter is again favourably drawn though and she should stake another serious claim.

This is an intriguing contest where the merit ratings may not necessarily be the best guide, particul- arly due to the lack of pace. The four-year old former Gauteng resident ALTITUDE is slightly out at the weights but she had a fair local debut on the polytrack last Friday and can build on that. She proved to be capable with frontrunning tactics on the Highveld and her visiting jockey is really capable when dictate the tempo.
