Hawaii Stakes

Grade 2 - 1400m - R400,000
Turffontein - Saturday 2nd March 2019 - Race 6 - 14:15

Magic Tips - Hawaii Stakes Preview

The brilliant three-year old SOQRAT returns to action on home turf after an incredible spell during the Cape summer where he triumphed in the Guineas before being narrowly beaten into 2nd in the Queen's Plate. Of course the 3rd placed finisher of his last start Rainbow Bridge emerged victorious in the Met next time out. This imported bay colt is best weighted in this Grade 2 event and he should take a power of beating.

The pick of the hard-knocking older campaigners could be ZOUAVES who loves this trip and has an impressive burst of speed as he displayed when thrashing CAPTAIN ALDO over this c & d in his penultimate outing.

WILL PAYS renews his fierce rivalry with the latter and he was a rather unlucky loser of his recent c & d showing two weeks ago. He finished just under two lengths ahead of the returning INFAMOUS FOX and can confirm the form with the 1kg favourable weight swing.

DOOSRA is another who loves this distance but he was also a victim of the ZOUAVES 'avalanche' earlier this year.

The bay mare CASCAPEDIA is the stablemate to the top selection and she oozes class as her form shows but she also has much to do at the weights on official ratings.

Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic

Grade 1 - 1800m - R1.25 Million
Turffontein - Saturday 2nd March 2019 - Race 8 - 15:30

Magic Tips - SA Fillies Classic Preview

An intriguing renewal of the 2nd leg of the Triple Tiara where many of the dozen entrants on display have stamina doubts which the likely solid tempo will severely test.

The first selection CHITENGO has absolutely no stamina issues and she has improved smartly with the addition of blinkers. The bay daughter of Elusive Fort ran on again for 5th in the Guineas last month and she can reverse that form with many of those rivals. She has gate speed to overcome her awkward draw and her maiden triumph proved her worth from the front.

The Tarry inmate SECOND REQUEST is also distance suited but she has been well travelled and rather interestingly has her first outing on home soil. She expectedly didn't disgrace herself during the Cape summer which culminated with a 5th placed finish behind Oh Susanna in the Paddock Stakes over this trip.

The Guineas victress NAFAAYES called on all her reserves to fend off RUNNING BRAVE in that thrilling finish last month but today's extra furlong is a big concern for the daughter of Exceed And Excel.

That is also an issue for the smart latter who continues to defy the odds whilst the pair of STORM DESTINY and BLOSSOM are bred to relish this distance.

SA Classic

Grade 1 - 1800m - R2 Million
Turffontein - Saturday 2nd March 2019 - Race 8 - 16:10

Magic Tips - SA Classic Preview

This is another interesting three-year old Grade 1 contest featuring just nine entrants and the de Kock machine saddles a quartet lively contenders.

Intriguingly, all four runners belong to the same owner and the stable may likely sacrifice one to get that desired strong tempo which will suit most of their charges and severely test the stamina of recent Guineas hero NATIONAL PARK who has firmly put PE racing on the map.

BARAHIN's pedigree doesn't convince that he will handle this distance but the bay son of Gimmethegreenlight had a smart comeback run in the Guineas and he should strip much fitter.

His stablemate HAWWAAM may not have the issue of overracing today and he can exact revenge on NATIONAL PARK. The half-brother to Met winner Rainbow Bridge will relish the extra furlong and he clearly has plenty more to come.

The Tarry inmate ZILLZAAL handled the rise in class well as he ran on late to finish half a length adrift of BARAHIN in the Guineas last month and the Silvano colt is bred to love this distance. He will also enjoy the likely solid gallop.

The other de Kock entrant worth mentioning is Cape Derby hero ATYAAB who has his first run back on the Highveld but of course takes on stronger.
