greyvilleturfThe running of the Gr2 WSB 1900 at Greyville on Saturday will be seen as an important piece of the Vodacom Durban July puzzle and the turf feature headlines the weekend action. View our preview, as well as comments from Magic Tips for this feature which takes place on Saturday 18th May 2019.

Weighted on merit rating bands, the keenly contested event provides a fitness barometer for some of the big race entrants, as well as giving the likes of the new smaking Azzie rising star ORPHEUS a chance to play his way into July contention.

The winner of this race will not incur a penalty of more than 6 MR points, while placed horses will not be penalised at all. So given defending champion Do It Again’s likely presence at the top of the weights in the big one on 6 July, there is little to lose for the likes of the Snaith duo of DOUBLEMINT and MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, who won’t see their 53kgs July allotment upped.

Winner of the Peninsula Handicap, and not disgraced in the Sun Met at his last start, DOUBLEMINT certainly has them cold at the weights and his tactical duel with the flying ORPHEUS should be a fascinating one. DOUBLEMINT likes to be given a chance, whereas ORPHEUS will be on his bicycle and pedalling from the off. That gives top jockey Anton Marcus a headache and the duel of wits between the champion and the determined Marco van Rensburg should be an entertaining sub-plot.

ORPHEUS led the opposition on a merry dance in his last victory over a slightly shorter trip, but he was not stopping that day and may well be capable of repeating the dosage. Todays field will be a lot more wary of assuming that he will weaken in the closing stages & will surely not let him escape with a big lead coming into the home straight.

KAMPALA CAMPARI returns from a 16 week rest, but if fit, should give a good account of himself.

DOUBLEMINT also returns from a break, but he brings solid Cape form to this race and with Marcus up, he must be considered a danger.

CAMPHORATUS was a suprise winner of his last race on the Highveld and does face stronger so perhaps a minor place cheque is the best he can hope for.

Magic Tips Predicted Finish

1st - 11 - ORPHEUS
2nd - 3 - Kampala Campari
3rd - 6 - Doublemint
4th - 9 - Camphoratus
5th - 2 - Made To Conquer
