sundowns150Nedbank Cup minnows EC Bees get their day in the limelight when they travel to meet Mamelodi Sundowns in Round of 16 on Tuesday night.

Mamelodi Sudnowns:

Sundowns had to work pretty hard to see off Cape Town All Stars 1-0 away from home in the previous round. Since then they have maintained their lead in the Absa Premiership title race with their lead at the top of the log currently standing at 4 points. Downs are also involved in the CAF Champions League qualifiers, they drew 0-0 at Rayon Sport of Rwanda in their latest outing and they will host the second leg of that tie this coming weekend.

As far as recent Nedbank Cip showings are concerned Downs were knocked out at the Round of 16 stage last season, losing 1-0 at home to Golden Arrows. In 2016 they lost a quarter final to Pirates and in 2015 they were winners, beating Ajax in the final on penalty kicks.

EC Bees:

EC Bees, who ply their trade in the third tier of domestic football, pulled out this plum draw after a 3-1 away win at Mariveni United in the previous round. In this competition last season they were also involved against a glamour club, losing 3-1 to Orlando Pirates.

The Verdict:

Back in 2012 Downs scored 24 unanswered goals against another minnow, Powerlines, in this competition and Sundowns friends of mine were quick to refer to that goal deluge when this draw was made.

That might be a little unkind to EC Bees who put up a good show against Pirates and it’s also worth factoring in the close proximity of Downs Champions League clash which might see a few fringe players given game time here. Even then you have to think Downs will just have way to much and I’m surprised to see the price for 4 goals or more in the game, a quote which will surely tumble if Downs are anything like full strength..

Bet: Over 3.5 goals at 14/10
