Kaizer Chiefs are short priced favourites to end their trophy drought in Saturday’s Nedbank Cup Final in Durban but they come against a very spiritied underdog in the shape of TS Galaxy.

Chiefs booked their place in the final with a 4-2 win over Chippa United in the semi’s. Having taken a first half lead Chiefs found themselves 2-1 down in the second half before 3 goals in the final quarter of an hour put the game to bed. The Nedbank Cup is the last remaining opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs to bank a trophy this season and they also beat top flight opposition in the last 8 with a 2-0 home win over cup specialists Cape Town City.
Earlier rounds saw Chiefs make hard work of 2 games against sides from the lower structures. A 1-0 win over Tornado FC was followed by a 3-0 victory against The Magic but both those matches went into extra time.
In the Absa Premiership Chiefs had a disastrous end to the campaign, eventually finishing ninth and they won’t feature in next season’s Top 8 competition. They failed to win any of the last 7 league outings and although they were never a factor in the title race their poor showing in the league puts even more pressure on the Amakhosi to deliver a trophy here.
TS Galaxy began their cup run a round earlier than Chiefs and a 5-2 thrashing of Ajax Cape Town put them in the hat with the top flight sides. Although they travelled in the next few rounds the draw was pretty kind as they avoided the big guns in completing wins away Umvoti (3-1), Jomo Cosmos (1-0) and Cape Umoya United (2-1). That set up a semi final date away to Golden Arrows and Galaxy proved they can mix it with the Absa Premiership teams with a 3-1 extra time win. They levelled that game up in injury time before scoring twice in the extra period to set up what must be the proudest day in their history.
Galaxy finished their National First Division in mid table and like Chiefs they also struggled in the later stages with 3 defeats and 1 draw. This cup run would probably go some way to explaining the late dip in league form and they now bid to cause what would be one of the bigger shocks in recent Nedbank Cup history.
The longer Galaxy can frustrate Chiefs the better their chances of pulling off a shock as the pressure will mount on the favourites. However, despite Chiefs poor form I feel they will have enough to win this in regulation time and I’ll go with a speculative play of Chiefs to win by a 2 goal margin (2-0, 3-1 etc..)
Bet: 90 Minute, Winning Margin, Chiefs by 2 goals exactly at 2.86/1
