football.nedbankMamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants contest the final of the Nedbank Cup at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday and Sundowns are favourites to land what would be a domestic treble.

Mamelodi Sundowns

So far this season Sundowns have won the MTN8, beating Cape Town City 2-1 in the final . They cruised to the DSTV Premiership title finishing all of 16 points clear at the top of the log with a record of 19 wins, 8 draws and 3 defeats. There was disappointment with a CAF Champions League exit but they now go in search of a clean sweep of the major domestic trophies.

In the early rounds of the Nedbank Cup Downs were 4-0 victors at Richards Bay and then cruised past 2 minnows with further wide margin wins but they hard to work hard in the semi finals to get the better of Royal AM with a 2-1 victory.

Marumo Gallants

Gallants found the early stages of the league season a struggle but they got to grips with it and eventually finished in tenth spot with a record of 7 wins, 13 draws and 10 defeats.

After a 2-0 win over Santos in the first round of this competition they knocked Pirates out on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw. In the quarter finals they edged out Baroka with a 1-0 win and in the semi finals another 1-0 win over TTM earned them a crack at a major trophy.

Last season Gallants were known as Tshakuma who beat Chippa in the Nedbank Cup Final so technically they are the holders of this trophy. Coach Dan Malesela is a former Nedbank Cup winner, he was in charge of TS Galaxy when they upset Kaizer Chiefs in the 2019 final and he also played for Downs before becoming a member of their coaching staff.

Recent Head to Head

The first league meeting this season was staged in November and Sundowns coasted to a 4-0 away win. The return was staged a month later and it finished locked up at 1-1.

The Verdict

Gallants coach Dan Malesela is a shrewd operator with a track record of springing surprises in this competition and he will no doubt have a game plan for this clash with by far the best side in the country.

At the end of a marathon season I wouldn't totally rule out the underdogs and just the 1 goal has been enough to win the last 4 finals so it could be tight. Gallants were no match for Downs first time round this season but did draw the second clash and who knows? Dan the Man and his team might just force extra time.
