Weather Forecast – Cape Town

Western Province:

With the Stormers Super Rugby Unlocked season now completed Western Province start the Currie Cup 4 points shy of the Bulls. The Stormers won 4 and lost 1 of their completed SRU matches and last week's scheduled visit to the Sharks was cancelled due to Covid protocols.

Their only defeat came away to the Bulls where they crashed and burned at Loftus in Round 4, trailing 39-6 when the threat of lightning caused an early finish with around 17 minutes still on the clock and the result stood.

That aside the Stormers were foot perfect in Cape Town beating the Lions and the Cheetahs and 4 of their Currie Cup matches will take place on home turf.

Stormers SRU Results

R1 bye, R2 Lions (h) won 23-17, R3 Pumas (a) won 42-37, R4 Bulls (a) lost 39-6, R5 Griquas (a) won 39-6, R6 Cheetahs (h) won 30-13, R7 Sharks (a) cancelled

Blue Bulls:

The Bulls clinched the Super Rugby Unlocked title when they completed a 21-5 home win over the Pumas last week. They finished that tournament 4 points better off than the Stormers and the Sharks but they will have to travel for 4 of the 6 Currie Cup matches.

The Bulls only SRU defeat came in Round 2, 19-17 to the Cheetahs in Bloem where they missed a late conversion attempt that would have levelled the scores

In Currie Cup 2019 the Bulls had a poor season, finishing with only the Pumas below them in the standings with 2 wins and 4 defeats whilst WP were just 1 place and 4 points better off and also missed the play offs.

Bulls SRU Results

R1 Griquas (h) won 30-23, R2 Cheetahs (a) lost 19-17, R3 Sharks (h) won 41-14, R4 Stormers (h) won 39-6, R5 Lions (a) won 30-25, R6 bye, R7 Pumas (h) won 21-5.

Betting Angle

When I priced this game up on Sunday night I had Western Province as -3.5 point favourites. The Stormers impressed in the recent SRU home win over the Cheetahs and Willemse is in great form at 10.

It will be a battle but I am happy to make an early call on Western Province.
