Weather Forecast – Buenos Aires

Jaguares:

Jaguares finished as runners up to the Lions in the South African Conference last season, 8 points in arrears. During the regular season they won 9 and lost 7 of their matches and at home they won 5 and lost 3. Jaguares reeled off 7 victories in succession from rounds 9 to 17 to help seal a play off place but in the first of the knockout rounds they went down 40-23 to the Lions in Johannesburg. They were also beaten by the Lions (47-27) in Joburg in Round 2 of the regular season but they took revenge in Round 7 with a 49-35 victory in Buenos Aires.

Jaguares have won all 3 of their home fixtures against the Lions and they have won each of their last 4 on home turf against South African opposition.

Lions:

The Lions topped the SA Conference in 2018 with a record of 9 wins and 7 defeats and their ability to collect bonus points made a big difference in the race for top spot. They only won 3 of 8 away fixtures in the regular season and after coming through the first 2 knockout rounds unscathed in Johannesburg they found the Crusaders in Christchurch a bridge too far, going down 37-18 in the final.

In pre-season the Lions beat the Sharks 19-14 in Super Hero Sunday in Cape Town and they were early in nailing up their team sheet for this match. The Lions come into the tournament as the odds on favourites to top the South African Conference again but you can get double digit prices against them winning the tournament.

Betting Angle

The Lions face a tough start away from home and although the starting XV looks pretty strong to me, whether they have enough to win the game I’m not so sure. Jaguares took time to hit their straps last season and I would rather give them s couple of rounds before forming an opinion of how they might go this year.

I’ll settle with a small and speculative play on the HT/FT market with the Lions to lead at the break and Jaguares to turn the scoreboard round in the second period.
