HURRICANES1Sunday's action in Round 5 of Super Rugby Aotearoa sees the Hurricanes take on the Highlanders in Wellington

Hurricanes v Highlanders, Sunday 12th July, Wellington, KO 05:35 (South African time)

Weather Forecast – Wellington

The Hurricanes kick started their tournament at the third time of asking. They returned from a bye to take on the Chiefs in Hamilton in Round 4 and although they were 5.5 point underdogs on the early handicap and played much of the final quarter with 14 men, they won the game 25-18. The Canes took control early and had enough in hand to thwart the Chiefs comeback.

In Round 2 they lost 39-25 at home to the Crusaders and they began their campaign with a 30-20 defeat to the Blues in Auckland and they were worth opposing on the handicap for both of those matches.

In the outright betting to win the tournament they can be backed at around 16/1

The Highlanders also have 1 win and 2 defeats to show for their efforts so far. They were well beaten by the Crusaders (40-20) in a home fixture last week whilst their only win came in the opening round, 28-27 at home to the Chiefs. The sole away fixture so far saw them go do narrowly (27-24) to the Blues in Auckland where a late fightback came up just short.

The Highlanders are third in the standings, 1 point clear of the Hurricanes but well behind the top 2 who meet on Saturday. In the outright betting to win the tournament the Highlanders are trading in the region of 16/1.

The teams didn't meet in the original season which was halted after 7 rounds of matches.

Betting Angle

I priced this game at Hurricanes -5.5 and that handicap has proven pretty close to the mark. There was some +10.5 Highlanders when GGGaming came out on Sunday and I know a number of the Forum lads tucked into that one.

As the week has moved on I find myself being drawn to the Hurricanes minus. They looked a different side last week when beating the Chiefs and while the Highlanders have been competitive in all of their matches I got the feeling last week they may just be running out of steam.

The Hurricanes have won their last 4 meetings in Wellington and the -6.5 would have arrived in 3 of those.

I even had a R500 bet on this one with Oracle Rugby on last nights THE HANDICAP “Rugby Chat that Matters”

BET: 5 units Hurricanes -6.5 at 9/10 at WSB
