Weather Forecast – Johannesburg
The Lions beat the Reds 27-20 in Johannesburg last week to open their account for the season. It was hard work even though the Reds were down to 13 men at one stage and the eventually margin of victory came in pretty much where the pre-match betting handicap suggested it would.
The Lions season began badly as they went down 38-8 away to Jaguares in Buenos Aires. They were just 10-8 behind at the break but things fell apart in the second 40 minutes and Jaguares easily covered the early minus handicap of around 9.5 points.
In 2019 the Lions struggled in South African derby matches. They lost home and away to the Bulls and the Sharks, they were edged out by the Stormers in Cape Town but they did win the return in Johannesburg comfortably, their only derby success of the campaign.
The Stomers record this season comprises of 2 wins from 2 with a total of 40 points scored and 0 conceded. The Stormers started as marginal favourites for their opening match at home to the Hurricanes and they came through with a 27-0 bonus point victory. Despite missing some key men through injury last week the Stormers followed up with a 13-0 derby win over the Bulls at Newlands, covering a 10.5 point handicap in the process.
After 2 rounds the Stormers, with 9 log points, were a 1 point clear of the Chiefs, Brumbies and Sharks in the overall standings. They now travel for the first time this season although they will return to Cape Town for Rounds 4 (Jaguares) and 5 (Blues).
In 2019 the Stormers won 3 and lost 3 of their South African derby matches with 1 win on the road coming against the Sharks (16-11) in Durban.
The Stormers last win in Johannesburg came in Round 3 of the 2015 season and since then they have won just 1 of the last 7 head to heads against the Lions (any venue) alongside 5 defeats and 1 draw.

I handicapped this game as Lions +5.5 in my regular Sunday handicapping exercise on You Tube – click here to watch and subscribe to our You Tube Channel so you don’t miss future shows.
This game has had me back and forth all week but having seen the teams I can’t look past the Stormers on the handicap. They should dominate upfront and especially in the scrums and that can lay the foundation for a win of 5 points or more.
It has been a while since the Stormers won in Joburg but this Lions side is a shadow of what we have seen a few seasons back. The Stormers -4.5 is where my hard earned cash is going.
