Weather Forecast – Cape Town

The Stormers sat out Round 1 and enter the fray with one of only two home games before Unlocked turns into the Currie Cup. In the outright betting to win this tournament the Stormers are trading at around 16/10, a good deal shorter than they were before the opening matches. Early team news reports suggest Pieter-Steph du Toit, Ruhan Nel and Seabelo Senatla won't be available this weekend.

The Stormers beat the Lions 34-21 at Loftus in the Super Fan Saturday warm up scoring 5 tries to 3 but they only secured the game late on.

In the original Super Rugby tournament earlier this year the Stormers edged out the Lions 33-30 in Johannesburg. Tat was 1 of 4 wins they started with but their last 2 games before lockdown ended in defeat.

R1 bye, R2 Lions (h), R3 Pumas (a) R4 Bulls (a), R5 Griquas (a), R6 Cheetahs (h), R7 Sharks (a)

The Lions have a competitive game under their belts, last week's 19-16 defeat to the Sharks in Durban. The Lions were given 7.5 points start on the handicap for that match and they passed up an opportunity to take a penalty which would have secured a draw, instead looking for a try and victory from a scrum which collapsed at the third time of asking. The Lions had clawed their way back from 13-3 down at half time and Jamba Ulengo scored their only try.

The Lions recent record at Newlands in Super Rugby is good. They drew here in 2015, won in 2017 and 2018 and in 2019 they went down by just 2 points.

In the outright betting to win the tournament the Lions can now be backed at around 10/1 and after this they have 4 successive home games to look forward to.

Betting Angle

The Stormers have selected a very strong pack and like Hanrick on last nights The Handicap Show I believe this is where they will gain an edge. He feels that the Stormers are going to run away with this and having initially been leaning towards a Stormers halftime handicap play I am going to put my head down and go for an 80 minute punt.

BET: 5 Units Stormers minus -10.5 points at 9/10
