Super Rugby Quarters, Currie Cup week 1 was created by Brent Graham
Loads of rugby this weekend and after a poor tournament financially for me I am looking forward to some games that really mean something. Not sure if there are any handicaps out yet but here are my projections

Brumbies +12.5 v Hurricanes
Crusaders -10.5 v Highlanders
Lions -13.5 v Sharks
Stormers -3.5 v Chiefs

The Currie Cup gets going this weekend - I am not going to have a go at the handicap but here are the week 1 fixtures

Cheetahs v Sharks
Griquas v Bulls
Pumas v Lions

Brumbies +10.5
Crusaders -5.5
Lions -15.5

Thanks Chris.

Tough route for the Canes I reckon and wont be getting my money at 3/1 thats for sure despite a good victory.

Crusaders with the much tougher quarter but should the Stormers beat the Chiefs the Saders will surely have an easier semi than the likely Lions v Canes clash.

Can anyone confirm which Q's play each other in the Semis?
I thought, if Lions win, they play winner of Storm vs Chiefs and If Saders win, they play Canes after they beat Brum!

Couch's article mentions Chiefs going to CT, then Saders, then back for Lions?

Found this in the ever reliable Wikipedia

27/28 July 2017 Higher-ranked winner from Quarterfinals 1 and 4 v Lower-ranked winner from Quarterfinals 1 and 4
27/28 July 2017 Higher-ranked winner from Quarterfinals 2 and 3 v Lower-ranked winner from Quarterfinals 2 and 3

1. Lions v Sharks
2, Crusaders v High
3. Stormers v Chiefs
4. Brumbies v Canes

Sorry Popgun it was one hectic day at the office. Yes as I have it ( and as The Chap and BG stated) it will be Lions/Sharks v Brums/Canes with the highest ranked one of the two hosting. Same for the Saders/Landers v Stormers/Chiefs.

I believe they tweaked it slightly to this format for some reason.

Guys there was a moment at the end of the Sharks v Lions 1st half that puzzles me. I may have missed something though.

The Lions score in the corner to go 3 points ahead - I need the conversion (a really tough one) to win my half time handicap bet. They replay the try and the next I see the players are running off the field - 13-10 Lions

I did hear a background noise - does anyone know what happened to the conversion? Maybe I missed it but got the impression Jantjies took a drop goal or something as they may have feared TMO intervention? Does anyone know what happened and did they show it on TV?

We were on different ends of the betting spectrum there as I had Sharks/Lions HT/FT. I was scrutinizing that passage and hoping for the TMO to check something :P. Definitely nothing on TV. Perhaps someone who was at the ground can shed some light for you.

after a shambolic effort at officiating the scrum and an overall poor display, how the hell does Marius van der Westhuizen get the Lions/Sharks gig again?!

Exactly the same issue for me too Brent! Was cursing Elton for that pathetic quick 22 drop out effort and then the Lions respond right on the hooter. Was waiting for the kick but assumed he rushed it for some reason. Not sure whether he went for the drop but I do think I heard the crowd kind of react like he missed it if I'm not mistaken.

On another point with the Kriel try I think the skipper felt the pass was forward. He didn't celebrate and then you could see he immediately told Jantjies to take the kick quickly. Whether it was forward or not I felt it was just good smart thinking from Kriel in that stance.

What is quite interesting to me is that unless the ref specifically asks to look at something the TMO just kind of looks at the first replay of the try. If it happens to be a front-on then you will usually get away with a forward pass. But if it is from basically in-line the TV ref will often intervene. I presume it is SuperSport who determines which pictures are provided when...

I note the Semi finals will be played both on Friday and Saturday night. Can anyone confirm that the top ranked team (assuming the Lions) would play the Friday night, and the Crusaders (assuming they beat the Highlanders) Saturday night in order to give the top ranked team 1 extra day to recover for the final?

I also saw a betting site offering odds on the final Quinella. The 2nd favourite was a Lions/Hurricanes final. I didn't think that could happen as the Lions (according to the rules) would meet the Hurricanes in the Semi?

Lions 5/4
Western Province 14/5
Sharks 9/2
Bulls 5/1
Cheetahs 8/1
Griquas 100/1
Pumas 100/1

First thought was Cheetahs looked good at 8/1 but I'm not up to speed with the likely strength of those above them in the betting, any thoughts welcome

If the Cheetahs join the Pro 12, they will start in September, which would mean they would miss the last 7 rounds of CC action and the Cheetahs XV would take over. How did the Cheetahs XVdo in the SSRugby challenge?

Seems I am against the grain here. Personally I make Chiefs win one my better bets of the weekend. Stormers did win earlier in the year but that really was a once off in my opinion. Everything went their way, lucky bounces, 50/50 calls the whole trip and if memory serves correct Chiefs were without Cruden.

I do not see that happening again .
Chiefs -2,5 for me and might just throw 13+ into a yankee.

Everything is going to be OK ;)

re Currie Cup - i think 7/1 Bulls worth a punt. Mitchell bound to make a difference and has decided to get involved hands on, side just needs confidence, can score tries and some good young talent coming through in Pretoria.

Bulls 7/1 with Betx.

Trying to keep it simple for the knock outs.

Win treble Hurricanes + Crusaders + Lions. Best I could get was 0.87.

Surely it can't lose?

have missed the podcast, quickest way for me to get some views. I did chuckle about BG's comment re tickets to NZ for final, am sure good banter with Oracle. (B)

Couch re Stormers outright - yes that ticket still alive, was 80/1 when posted 6 weeks back, so a little bit more value that 66's but agree that they do have a battle to get to final. Never know though.

Cheers BB!

That one came in perfectly as the famous Kiwi quarter kicked in there towards the end. Stress free weekend now as that was a big play for me. Lions 2nd half cap my only other decent interest then followed by the Cheetahs on the minus in the CC.

Getting less confident of my Chiefs play but @ 2/1 its only a small strike. Reckon the Crusaders could be a tight old battle so nothing major for me there apart from a little play on what I mentioned in the Pod.

Just letting the forum know that's its driving rain and a southerly wind here in Christchurch at the moment (1:50pm) which is expected to last through into this evening which will no doubt affect the game. In fact the Higlanders only got here 2 hours ago as they couldn't get off the ground due to this weather. This will be a close forward oriented game with a ton of high balls and kicks. I'm on the Crusaders 1-12

Your correct on that friend, not going out in this rubbish weather. It's been like this for a couple of days now......I hope the temporary stadium drains well or the players may be body surfing tonight haha
The forecast is for rain but I think it will lessen counting down to kick off I think.
I actually rate the highlanders for this game but not to the same extent due to the weather, surely these conditions will suit the saders pack. One thing I'm sure of thought is that the landers will throw the kitchen sink at us tonight but I rate the saders chances in this game.
