It"s Monday night and except for Brighton v Stoke there is not much on -- Well let's face facts - there is still not much on. BUT - never fear GFTG is here. How about a stat you won't find anywhere? When was the last time the bet " Match to be won by one goal exactly did not come up in an EPL game week?. That would be 23-25 April 2016 - But wait - There were only 8 matches that week. The last time in a full game week - 15-17 September 2012. We have had 9 matches so far and this bet has not come up - so - DO YOU FEEL LUCKY PUNTER?

Brighton v Stoke
Match to be won by one goal exactly @ 25/20 at Sportingbet

( This posting is only for the entertainment of the three punters who have nothing else in their lives and should not lead you to bet your house. All the facts are, however, true )

Australian FFA Cup Final
Sydney vs Adelaide

Despite the appearances and the fact that they took their place back to the top of the ladder in A-League, Sydney have not looked as clinical and clear winners of their games in the past few weeks, like they were last season.

I saw signs of uncertainty, Sydney were asked questions quite a few times this season.

For example, Sydney conceded 2 goals from Wellington Phoenix, the rock bottom team in the league, in a tight 3-2 win.

Letting in two goals was unheard of last season, when Sydney had the tightest defence in the league, with less than half a goal conceded on average per match.

Then they drew 2-2 at home, this time the Wanderers scoring both goals in the first half, before Sydney came back and levelled the score in the second half.

Then they lost 0-2 away to Central Coast Mariners, currently second from bottom.

Most recently they struggled to beat Newcastle Jets, 2-1 at home. OK, the Jets are having a great season, currently sitting second right behind Sydney.

What I’m saying is that Sydney have to work harder for their wins this season, and even when they do work hard, they don’t always win anymore, and they are vulnerable.

Sydney’s coach rested some players when they played 3 days ago in the league and will have a full strength squad for this Cup Final.

Adelaide played 5 days ago (2-1 away win to Central Coast Mariners), and they had time to rest. They have almost a full strength squad, with a couple of players unavailable due to injury.

When they had a full squad in the beginning of the season, Adelaide were playing great football and they were undefeated the first few games.

On the way to the final Adelaide eliminated three A-League teams, whereas Sydney had to play only against one, the rest coming from inferior leagues.

Both teams have very good coaches, and Sydney might be at an advantage in terms of players availability.

Given that it is a Cup Final, and both teams play good football and play with determination, I’m going for cards and corners, with a limited number of goals.

Bet 1: Over 10.5 corners @1.83

Bet 2: Adelaide over 2.5 cards @2.10

Bet 3: Total cards: Over 4.5 @2.10 (alternatively Asian Total Cards: Over 4.0 @1.80)

Bet 4: Number of goals: 2 or 3 goals @2.00

16/10 for Monaco to win vs Leipzig is overpriced.

Monaco desperate for the win as they lying in 3rd. Falcao got back from injury this past weekend.

Leipzig not in great form and not great away from home.

I like CSKA Moscow tonight at 12/10 v Benfica at Playabets

Benfica as I read it have nothing to play for whereas Moscow are very much in the hunt still Moscow beat Benfica awy and given the relative importance of this game to the 2 sides I think the 12/10 (generally 11/10) is worth a rare midweek football punt

Some excellent midweek punts Mackem. I was also on Sevilla and Liverpool to be involved in a scoring draw (was even optimistic when the score was 0-2 knowing my team's defensive frailties) , although i wrote off the result once the score was 0-3. A reverse of the Istanbul final fixture vs AC :)

Apologies to anyone that might have followed. 1 card away from 5 in this game.

and never saw that Monaco result coming. Fair to say Monaco are no where close to last seasons heroics.

Australian A-League
Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory

Two big names are out for the Jets, Duncan and O’Donovan (leading goalscorer, 7 goals in 6 matches). We could see the impact of O’Donovan’s absence in the match against Sydney, when the Jets couldn’t avoid the defeat.

Victory are at full strength, they beat Perth away comfortably (2-0) last week, they looked well settled so they should build up on the their momentum.

However, the Jets aren’t second in the league for no reason, so this match being played in Newcastle, is no easy task for Victory, even against an injury hit Jets.
Drawing on similarities, Perth were missing two big names too, of which one prolific forward, and Victory won 2-0.
The Jets however has looked a better outfit than Perth so far, and should be able to hold on for a draw.

Victory +0.25 @1.70
Draw @3.66

Melbourne City vs Perth Glory

Glory is going through a rough time due to injuries. They've got 7 players ruled out, among which 4 star players, Taggart, Castro, Andreu and Neville.
Glory's coach already fielded a 16 year old in last week's home defeat (0-2) to Melbourne Victory, and will do so again tonight.

City are boosted by the return of Cahill and import striker Ross McCormack.
They are on a poor run, after gaining only one point in their last three matches, so this is a very good opportunity for them to recover.

Bet 1: City -1 @1.85

Bet 2: City over 1.75 goals @1.63

Wellington Phoenix vs Central Coast Mariners

Phoenix had their last week's match postponed, so are well rested for this match.
Moreover, they welcome back several players from injury/suspension/international duty, and they are at full strength.

At home they have scored 9 goals in 3 matches this season, conceding 6 goals.
As productive as their attack is, their defence has been like a sieve.

The Mariners have a full strength squad too, as not only they welcome back some players from suspension or injury (including their captain and their leading goal scorer), but they've also singed up two Dutch players recently to boost their midfield.

I think we'll see goals in this match.

Bet 1: Phoenix Over 1.75 goals @2.03
Bet 2: Over 3 goals @2.02
Bet 3: Total goals/ BTTS Yes - Over 2.5 goals @1.80

Got stabbed in the eye by my dog while playing so a little late with the opinion on the two EPL games Mackem ran out of time on

Swansea v Bournemouth
Swansea at home are W1-D0-L5 while Bournemouth have drawn only one of their 12 matches this season and have won their last two aways at Newcastle and Stoke. So very little incentive to punt the draw. Both sides are on offer at 18/10 for the win and I my lucky coin flip came up with
Bournemouth win @ 18/10

Tottenham v WBA
In their six matches at Wembley Spurs have beaten Liverpool 4-1 but the other five have all ended even or decided by a single goal. WBA parted company with Tony Pulis during the week and the players need to perform to impress a new manager ( possibly Pardew?). Spurs come off a quality mid week away Champion's League win in Dortmund and I expect them to win here - but the question is by how much? I fancy by one only and I do like the odds on that
Tottenham -1 the draw @ 27/10

Earlier in the week when checking my odds against the books offers I was quite surprised to see Liverpool at virtually evens against Chelsea who were on offer at 26/10. I like Mackem's draw pick on the match but will probably include the Chelsea DC at 8/10 in a few acca's.

Australian A-League
Adelaide United vs WS Wanderers

Adelaide Utd are coming from a great Cup final they played 5 days ago in Sydney.
They lost it after 120 minutes of very good football, but they lost it to the best team in the league, who was also playing at home: Sydney FC.
They did have their chances though, but they missed.

Some may argue that Adelaide players will be tired after an extenuating match.
However, that match was played 5 days ago, and not 3 or 4 days ago.

Players at this level are used to such levels of effort, we can see examples throughout the world, but also right here in Australia.
In the basketball league for example, teams play in New Zealand and then travel to Perth to play in 2 or 3 days time.
That is across 5 hours time zones and probably 7 hours flight, without all the other factors (travel to and from the airport, check in times, etc), and they are fresh as ever and play to win the game.

We have more examples this weekend, exactly here in A-League.

Sydney FC played yesterday, so they had only 4 days rest after the gruelling cup final.
Brisbane Roar were well rested and they came with the stated intent to harm Sydney.

The result? Sydney were 2-0 up after 15 minutes and 3-0 in the second half, before Roar scored once in injury time.

Another example.
Wellington had a week off due to their match being postponed.
Central Coast Mariners looked like a good victim for Phoenix, who had their entire squad available.

Did Mariners care? They won 4-1.

One month ago Adelaide beat WS Wanderers in Sydney, 2-1 in the cup semifinal.

Adelaide are playing good football and the Wanderers have a new coach, and this is his only second game at the helm.
Maybe he didn't have enough time to get his players used to his new style.

Another thing that drew my attention this weekend is that all matches had plenty of goals, tired or rested teams.

I think that Adelaide deserves a little more respect, and I also think that we will have quite a few goals.
However, I won't bet them to win, as the bookies might know something... ;)

Smaller stakes...

Bet 1: Adelaide (+0.25) @1.75

Bet 2: Total goals over 2.5 & BTTS Yes @2.10
