After a short break, Formula 1 heads to the Americas for a gruelling run of four races in five weeks. First up is the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. Known for its mix of high-speed straights, sweeping corners, and dramatic elevation changes, COTA often produces unpredictable racing and is a favourite among fans and drivers alike. In this preview we’ll recap the championship picture, review recent form, and highlight a few suggested bets.

PREVIOUS RACE – Singapore GP

For the second race in succession, we had a surprising outcome compared to the form book earlier in the season. George Russell delivered a superb drive to take victory, while Max Verstappen claimed second place – his fourth consecutive podium. Lando Norris secured third with Oscar Piastri close behind in fourth. The McLarens had looked dominant for much of the season, but recent results suggest the tide may be turning.

Championship Update

  • Oscar Piastri – 336 points
  • Lando Norris – 314 points
  • Max Verstappen – 273 points

What once looked like a two-horse McLaren race has developed into a thrilling three-way fight. Norris has outscored Piastri in the last two events and cut the gap to just 22 points, while Verstappen’s consistency has brought him back into the mix – now 63 points off the lead. It’s still a tall order, but given Verstappen’s pedigree, a late-season surge cannot be ruled out.

Track Focus – Circuit of the Americas

COTA is one of the most technical circuits on the calendar, featuring:

  • A steep uphill climb into Turn 1, a prime overtaking spot.
  • A flowing sector one “esses” section, inspired by Silverstone’s Maggots-Becketts.
  • A long back straight leading into a heavy braking zone at Turn 12, offering another overtaking opportunity.
  • A tricky final sector with off-camber corners where tyre wear often plays a key role.

With 56 laps around the 5.5 km circuit, strategy, tyre management, and track position are critical. Historically, COTA has been kind to Verstappen and Red Bull, but Ferrari and Mercedes have also shown strong pace here.

United States GP 2024

Last year’s race  was won by Charles Leclerc with Carlos Sainz taking 2nd place and Max Verstappen took the 3rd podium spot.

Verdict & Suggested Bets

The only driver to appear on the podium in the last four races has been Max Verstappen. Not only has he been consistent, but he’s also managed to finish ahead of both McLarens in each of those races. With Red Bull finding strong pace again and COTA being a track he enjoys, Verstappen looks a solid play.

Suggested Bet: Max Verstappen to win at 3.50

Amidst all the focus on McLaren and Verstappen, George Russell continues to quietly deliver one of his best seasons. Last weekend’s win lifted him to 237 points, already closing in on his career-best total with six races to go. In his current form, another podium is well within reach.

Suggested Bet: George Russell podium finish at 2.10
