Brentford vs. Manchester United, EPL Round 17, 19 January 2022 22:00

After a 3-0 loss to Anfield on Sunday Brentford have continued their slide down the EPL table. Despite a promising start to the New Year that saw them picking up a 2-1 win against Aston Villa, back-to-back losses have sent them down to 14th spot with 23 points. Their recent poor form can largely be blamed on their attack who have not been able to deliver consistently and with only three goals in their last five matches the Bees are starting to fall off the wagon somewhat.

It’s a real pity for the EPL newbies because they had such a promising first half of the season which included a victory on the opening day of the season against Arsenal and a draw with Liverpool, but those days seem to be long gone for the Bees and they have now only seen two wins in their last 10 EPL matches. They are still a good 10 points clear of the relegation zone, but if they continue the way they are they might just find themselves in the bottom three at the end of the season and heading back to the Championship. There is a small glimmer of hope for Brentford as they head into their clash on Thursday in the sense that they have won three out of their last five matches at home in the EPL and also managed to restrict league-leaders Manchester City to a 1-0 win in their final game of 2021. Brentford will be hoping that their return to their home ground on Thursday can help them spark a better performance and pick up their first points in three rounds of football.

The Red Devils will be bitterly disappointed after a Bruno Fernandes double on Saturday at Villa Park was wiped out by two late goals from the home side. It was the perfect opportunity for United to get their first win of the New Year, but unfortunately Rangnick’s men failed to close out the game and only walked away with a single point. Their draw against Aston Villa means they now sit in seventh place on the table with 32 points and now also trail Spurs by a point despite the fact that there is a difference of three games between the teams.

Five points sit between themselves and the Top 4 and unfortunately for the Red Devils another wasted opportunity at picking up three points could come back to haunt them and result in them missing out on a place in the Champions League next season. Chances might run out for United if they play to more unexpected draws and losses, but the good news for them is that Thursday night is the perfect opportunity to pick up maximum points against a Brighton team who are in shambles. Unfortunately for the Red Devils away form has been an issue this season and they have only managed to pick up one win and three draws in their last five away EPL matches. This includes a draw and a loss against two of the worst teams in the league, Newcastle and Watford, and they will really need to turn things around and shake their poor away form so that they can still give themselves a chance at the Top 4 this season.

Since the Bees are new to the league the two sides have never met before in the EPL and the only previous clash between them was a pre-season club friendly back in July last year. Brentford managed to force a 2-2 draw on the day against a young and inexperienced United team and they will most likely face a much bigger challenge in their first EPL meeting with United.

Prediction

Although Manchester United have not been at their best recently and have struggled the last few months with their away form in the league I do think they will be able to pick up the three points here. Brentford have had some wins on their home turf this season but they were against the likes of Everton and Watford – teams considerably weaker than their opponents for this match. Brentford’s defense was completely exposed and opened against the Reds and Saints and I believe that United will be able to do the same.

Despite only drawing against Villa, Rangnick’s attack is looking a lot better now and starting to show more firing power. I don’t expect the defense to let things slip again like they did on the weekend, so as long as the attack can keep up the good form then it should be a straight-forward three points for the visitors. In my eyes the bookies are being quite generous giving around 1.80 for a Manchester United win as I am expecting this to be their first convincing away win in the league under the leadership of Rangnick. Since Brentford have conceded seven goals in their last two matches I am willing to have a crack at over 2.5 goals in the match and I also like the price on Fernandes to score in the match after he scored a double against Villa.
