English Premier League Round 7

Manchester United vs. Everton, Saturday 2 October 13:30

After a shock 1-0 loss at Old Trafford to Aston Villa last week, the Red Devils have now slipped down to fourth place in the standings. The Villans handed them their first loss of the season and also ended their three match winning streak which included a 2-1 win away to West Ham, a 4-1 win at home to Newcastle and a 1-0 win away to Wolves. Solskjaer’s men will however be going into this clash with some momentum after a last minute goal by Cristiano Ronaldo saw them overcome Villarreal in their midweek Champions League clash.

The Toffees have 13 points after their 2-0 win against Norwich last week and now find themselves in fifth spot right behind Man United. With 12 goals so far this season it’s quite clear that they are not having any problems finding the back of the net. Their only loss up until now was a 3-0 loss away to Aston Villa and this is also the only game where they have failed to score a goal. With the exception of their trip to Villa Park, goals away from home haven’t been a problem for Everton who netted four goals in their other two away fixtures against Brighton and Leeds.

In their last five EPL clashes the two sides have played to three draws and each has won one. However, Everton’s win came at Goodison Park and their last win at Old Trafford was all the way back in 2013.

Based on their form this season both teams seem to be evenly matched, but Manchester United definitely have the edge here. Their home form against Everton suggest that a loss is unlikely, but the Toffees might just be able to force a stalemate. For me there is great value on the Everton Double Chance and I am willing to have a crack at it. Since Calvert-Lewin’s injury Townsend has really stepped up to the plate for the Toffees and scored twice in their last three matches. I feel that if Everton are going to find the net on Saturday he is their man and there is a great price on him to score in the match.

Brighton vs. Arsenal, Saturday 2 October 18:00

The Seagulls had a chance to go top of the EPL table last week but failed to do so after a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. Along with four other teams they have 13 points, but since they have only netted eight goals so far they find themselves in sixth place. Prior to last week they managed a 2-1 win at home against Leicester, a 1-0 win away to Brentford, a 2-0 loss at home to Everton , a 2-0 win at home to Watford and a 2-1 win away to Burnley. Amex Stadium has been a good venue for Brighton where they have won three of their last four EPL matches and kept seven clean sheets in 2021.

Arteta’s Gunners seem to have come back to life after their horrific start to the season which saw them losing 2-0 at home to Brentford, losing 2-0 away to Chelsea and losing 5-0 away to Manchester City. They have now silenced their critics with three consecutive wins which include a 1-0 win at home to Norwich, a 1-0 win away to Burnley and their 3-1 win against Tottenham last week. They have now climbed to tenth spot on the table and have 9 points in the bag. The win against Tottenham was a massive confidence booster for Arsenal, but they still have a long way to go. Although their defense has been considerably better in the last few weeks they will need to keep things tight to continue their climb up the table. Last week’s performance accounts for half of their total goals so far this season and they are going to need a few more matches like that one to get back on par with the top-flight.

It’s dead even in their last five EPL matches with both teams winning two and one match ending in a draw. Arsenal did manage to pull off a 1-0 win in Brighton last season, but this was the only time they have done so in the four matches they have played there since the Seagulls joined the EPL.

Although Brighton have only lost one out of three home matches this season and also having a decent home record against the Gunners, I feel that all the momentum is with Arsenal. The Gunners seem to have gotten their defense in order and I don’t see their winning streak coming to an end. With two goals in his last three EPL matches Aubameyang looks to be the go to man for Arsenal and I will back him to score the first goal of the match. I will also add in a play on only one team to score in the match in case Brighton somehow manage to keep another clean sheet at home.

Both teams to score:no – 2.04

Liverpool vs. Manchester City, Sunday 3 October 17:30

The EPL has saved the best for last this weekend with the top two teams in the competition going head-to-head at Anfield to end off Round 7.

The Reds missed out on maximum points last week when they drew 3-3 away to EPL newcomers Brentford, but they still find themselves at the top of the table with 14 points. They have scored a total of 15 goals this season which is the most by any side so far, while Mo Salah is currently the top goalscorer in the tournament along with Vardy and Antonio.

Although Klopp’s men will undoubtedly be disappointed about last week’s draw, the positive is that they have now scored at least three goals in three consecutive EPL matches as well as at least 3 goals in six consecutive matches across all competitions. Goalscoring is clearly no issue and if you disregard last week’s slip up against the Bees their defense is also up to scratch. Prior to last week they had only conceded one goal and if they can move on from their setback in Brentford they should have no problem remaining at the top of the table.

City became the first side to crack the Chelsea defense in three matches last week as they took down the Blues 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. They find themselves in second place with 13 points thanks to an outstanding goal difference comprised of 12 goals scored and only one conceded. The only goal against them this season came in their opening match against Tottenham and after putting one past Chelsea last week they now officially have the best defense in the competition. Just like Liverpool, City are undefeated this season and their record includes a 1-0 win away to Leicester, a 5-0 win at home to Arsenal and 5-0 win at home to Norwich in addition to their win against Chelsea and draw against Tottenham.

In their last five EPL clashes Manchester City have won three, Liverpool have won one and one match has ended in a draw. Their most recent clash at Anfield saw the Sky Blues win 4-1 and in the last three seasons City have only left Anfield empty-handed on one occasion.

Based on current form and past performance we are going to be in for another cracking clash that could really go either way. Both teams have a potent attack right now and neither are letting in a lot of goals. The Liverpool defense slipped up last week but you can be sure that it won’t be letting in a lot of goals on Sunday. It’s a bit of a speculative play but I can’t see any result other than a draw in this one. Liverpool might be netting a lot of goals right now, but against a defense like City’s that is bound to change. I also have a feeling that we could be in for a bore draw but I am going to have a small nibble on Mo Salah and Gabriel Jesus to each score a goal in the match in case we do see some goals.

Draw – 3.56
Anytime Goalscorer: Mo Salah – 2.50
