Tottenham vs Southampton Preview: 6 August 16:00

Tottenham kick their 2022/2023 Premier League season off with a home fixture against Southampton in North London.

Tottenham

Antonio Conte will kick his first full season on Saturday afternoon in front of the home crowd who have already grown to back the Italian manager after securing the London side Champions League qualification last season. The club has showed backing of the ex-Inter manager in transfer window with the Lillywhites enforcing their camp with the arrival of Clément Lenglet, Ivan Perišić, Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma and the prolific Richarlison to bolster their already dangerous duo of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

Going into the new season Tottenham have played just 4 pre-season fixtures consisting of 2 victories, 1 draw and 1 loss. Looking at the fixtures, it would not be unfair to say that Conte`s side have not delivered the expected results – a 6-3 victory over K-League Allstars marked a promising campaign, however they would only follow the win up with a 1-1 draw against Sevilla, a mere 2-1 victory over Rangers and a 1-0 defeat to Mourinho`s Roma totalling their pre-season goals to 9 and conceded goals to 6 in just 4 games.

Regardless of an underwhelming pre-season, Conte has made some exciting additions to high side, and we can certainly expect a better performance with the Premier League stakes weighing higher than pre-season. Their defence has not been up to the standards during pre-season so conceding at least one goal against the Saints would not be surprising, however, Conte`s aggressive play and their attacking arsenal of Richarlison, Kane and Son will most likely guarantee them all 3 points on the afternoon.

Southampton

Southampton will be expected to deliver a far better 2022/2023 season after avoiding relegation by just 5 points last season. However, it will not be an easy task for Ralph Hasenhüttl as the Saints have not shown aggression in the transfer of improving their odds of a better season. Southampton have welcomed Joe Aribo from Rangers, Sékou Mara from the French Ligue 2, Roméo Lavia and Gavin Bazunu from Manchester City’s U23, and lastly Armel Bella-Kotchap from Bundesliga`s Vfl Bochum.

Not to write the signing off [Understandably with a limited budget], however the Saints have been rather underwhelming in pre-season that consisted of a 3-1 loss to Leipzig, a 0-0 draw against both Austria Klagenfurt and Watford, a 2-1 loss to Villarreal and just a single 3-1 win over Monaco totalling to just 5 goals scored and 6 conceded across 5 games.

To give the Saints a bit of hope, Tottenham themselves have not had the best defensive record going into the 2022/2023 season so it would not be unreasonable to expect at least one goals from Ralph`s men. Nevertheless, the Southampton side have not displayed serious ambition on playing an improved season so far and with current circumstances a loss in London seems like the most likely outcome to the start of Southampton`s Premier League campaign.
