English Premier League Round 5

The English Premier League enters Round 5 this weekend and the bulk of the matches will be taking place on Saturday. Sunday features three matches, two of which are my top matches for this round and offer the best betting options. Let’s have a look to see if we can bag a few more winners this week!

Aston Villa vs. Everton, Saturday 18 September 18:30

Aston Villa have slipped down to 12th place on the table after their 3-0 loss at Stamford Bridge. Prior to last week they managed a 1-1 draw at home to Brentford, a 2-0 win at home to Newcastle and a 3-2 loss away to Watford. The Villans are yet to lose at home this season and a return to Villa Park this week could be exactly what they need to get their campaign back on track.

Everton have slotted into 4th place on the table after their 3-1 win at home to Burnley last week. The Toffees are still undefeated this season and their record so far include a 2-0 win away to Brighton, a 2-2 draw away to Leeds and a 3-1 win at home to Southampton. With 10 goals so far this season they are the second highest scoring team along with West Ham and had they not let in four goals they would find themselves a couple of positions higher on the table.

This one is quite a difficult one to call because Aston Villa have proven to be strong at home so far, but Everton haven’t had any trouble finding the net away from home. The last time these two sides met at Villa Park they played to a goalless draw and three out of their last four clashes have seen two or less goals. My instinct tells me it’s going to be a tight clash once again and the under looks like the best bet.

West Ham vs. Manchester United, Sunday 19 September 15:00

The Hammers had a promising start to the season with a 4-2 win away to Newcastle and a 4-1 win at home to Leicester, but after back-to-back draws to Crystal Palace and Southampton they now find themselves in eighth place on the table. They return home this week, but they may need to wait another week before seeing their next win as they get set to take on top of the table Manchester United.

The Red Devils are one of four undefeated teams this season, but thanks to 11 goals so far they find themselves in first place. Last week Cristiano Ronaldo had a dream return to Old Trafford, bagging a brace and helping his side to a 4-1 win. Before his return Man United managed a 1-0 win away to Wolves, a 1-1 draw away to Southampton and a 5-1 at home to Leeds. They did suffer a shock midweek Champions League loss to Young Boys on Tuesday and West Ham will be hoping that this will impact their confidence going into this clash.

The last four times these two teams met in the EPL Manchester United won twice, West Ham once and there was one draw. One of those wins for Man United was in London, while West Ham’s win was also at home.

For me West Ham’s defense is not going to cut it against a side like Man United. The Red Devils’ attack is looking red hot right now and I don’t see it being stopped by a team like West Ham. The Hammers may have a decent home record against their opponents, but this is a really good Man United side that is not letting in many goals right now. I think there is some excellent value on backing the away team and the bet should land comfortably.

Tottenham vs. Chelsea, Sunday 19 September 17:30

A 58th minute red card last week saw Tottenham go down 3-0 against Crystal Palace and they now find themselves in 7th place on the table. Goals haven’t been flowing for Spurs so far this season, but they did manage to secure victory in their first three matches against Watford, Wolves and Manchester City. They are now tasked with a home fixture against Chelsea, a side that is full of firing power and that has had no problem finding the back of the net.

Chelsea sit in 2nd place on the table thanks to them netting 9 goals and only conceding one goal so far this season. Last week they secured another 3 points thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win against Aston Villa at home, while their other two wins this season came against Crystal Palace at home and Arsenal away from home. Their defense is still standing firm and other than conceding a penalty against Liverpool it is yet to be cracked. Romelu Lukaku leads the scoring for the Blues with three goals so far this season and has certainly proven to be a valuable acquisition for the Blues.

In the last four clashes between the two sides Spurs have failed to win, with one match ending in a draw and Chelsea winning three. That includes two wins for the Blues at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and with their current form I can easily see them making it three wins in four at the venue.

For me Chelsea definitely have the better attack between the two sides, but it is also worth noting that up until last week Spurs were not letting in any goals. The Blues may find it tough to break through the Spurs defense but I do believe that they have enough in their attack to eventually do so. I don’t see Spurs scoring in this match simply because Chelsea have one of the best defenses in the league right now and because goals have been hard to find for Tottenham. Once again there is excellent value here for an away win and I am not hesitating to back the Blues. You can also get just over even money on Lukaku to score so I will have a stab at that as well.
