SUPER RUGBY Trans-Tasman: Saturday

Let’s take a look at Saturday’s Trans-Tasman action lurking in Round 2 of the new comp.

Blues vs Waratahs – Saturday 22 May @ 06:35, Auckland

It was a case of Red Rover, Red Rover we call whoever over as the Canes and Tahs flung the ball about in Sydney last week. Whilst both sides gave in to their free-spirited attacking game at the SCG the Blues followed a more pragmatic approach of first softening the Rebels up for half an hour before they swung for the fence in a six-try effort.

The Waratahs have proven that despite not having a surplus of talent in their ranks they at least have more fighting spirit than many a previous version of this Sydney outfit. The Blues are often guilty of going walk-about leading up to a game they are well fancied to clean up at (in this case probably to the level of Nicholas Louw at a sweet 16 birthday party in Pretoria). If they have their eye on the prize then the Blues at home could cruise this. If not they might be scrappy for a late score to seal the win come the 81st minute.

Chiefs vs Brumbies – Saturday 22 May @ 09:05, Waikato

The Chiefs stumbled out of the gate in the Trans-Tasman like an overweight donkey trying to take part at the Durban July. The Brumbies on the other hand did their country proud by making the Aotearoa champions sweat like Fran Malherbe during a bleep test with a strong final ten minutes.

Having mentally and physically fronted up to the Crusaders in the final one would have expected it to be tough going for the Chiefs to roll out a top effort in their opening Trans-Tasman clash. They will hope to be a touch sharper against a Brumbies side who remain one of the better balanced teams in the competition and clearly well focussed to try and secure another finals appearance in 2021.

Betolimp Bets:

Brumbies to lead at half-time by 1-8 points and Chiefs to win by 1-12 points @ 9.50

First Tryscorer: Brad Weber @ 15.00

Last Tryscorer: Pita Sowakula @ 23.00

Reds vs Crusaders – Saturday 22 May @ 11:45, Brisbane

It’s champion vs champion as the Reds and Crusaders square off. The Brissie side were clearly still nursing a celebratory hangover last week but this time out they need to get their heads in the game if they want to come out of this one fighting fit. In a short comp a second loss would all but put the Reds out of outright contention a mere two weeks into the action.

The Crusaders put the van into neutral a touch early in Week 1 of this comp but they would have been happy enough with the “W” over the Brumbies. Going two-from-two against the 2 top sides from across the ditch will leave the Christchurch side in mint condition so expect them to be well up for this one. It promises to be a mouth-watering encounter and with the Reds looking for a record twelfth straight home victory I’m expecting a big effort from the home side.

Betolimp Bets:

Reds to lead at half-time by 1-8 points and Crusaders to win by 1-12 points @ 10.00

Suliasi Vunivalu to score the first try and Crusaders to win the game @ 19.00

Last Tryscorer: Will Jordan @ 11.00
