England vs. South Africa, Saturday 6 November 16:00

England

It’s been a perfect World Cup for the English with four wins from four matches and they now look to end off the group stage on a high when they take on the Proteas. The Three Lions have already secured their place in the semi-final win or lose come Saturday and with their excellent net run rate it looks unlikely that they will finish in any position other than top of the group. Despite England having already secured top spot in the group you can be sure that they won’t want to break their momentum going into the semi-finals and if they decide to take the day off on Saturday they will be doing so at their own detriment.

England started off their ICC T20 World Cup campaign with a massive six wicket victory against the West Indies which they followed up with a dominating eight wicket victory against Bangladesh. In what many expected to be their toughest test of the tournament, they comfortably chased down a total of 126 runs against Australia to win by eight wickets in Dubai. Their last match was on Monday in Sharjah against Sri Lanka where they bowled out their opponents well short of the 164 run target for a 26 run victory.

Jos Buttler is the leading run scorer for England and has played some really impressive knocks including 101 not out against Sri Lanka and 71 not out against Australia. The likes of Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan have also made some noise with the bat, but overall Buttler really stands out from the rest of the line-up. In the bowling department it’s mostly been the spinners that have been getting the job done for England with Moeen Ali bagging six wickets in the tournament so far and Adil Rashid getting seven. Rashid’s seven wickets includes a mind-boggling spell of four wickets for two runs against the Windies which you don’t see too often in this game. Tymal Mills has been the top fast bowler for the Three Lions with seven wickets which includes a spell of 3/27 against Bangladesh.

South Africa

The Proteas are in a less than ideal position going into this match, but there is still a mathematical chance that they can make it into the semi-finals provided that they win on Saturday. Since their loss in their opening match of the tournament they have kept their hopes of qualification for the playoffs alive with victories in their last three matches, but unfortunately they have fallen short with their net run rate. They currently find themselves in third place with six points thanks to an inferior net run rate which means they will need the Windies to do them a massive favour against Australia in the earlier match on Saturday.

South Africa are in this position due to a bad start to the tournament that saw them losing to Australia in Abu Dhabi by five wickets. However, credit should be given to our boys for shrugging off this loss right away and bouncing back three days later with a massive eight wicket victory against the Windies. This was followed up with a narrow four wicket victory against Sri Lanka in Sharjah which came down to the second last ball of the match. The Proteas’ last match was on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi against Bangladesh where they chased down an easy target of 84 runs for a six wicket victory.

Aiden Markram has been the top batsman for the South Africans with a 110 runs in the tournament so far which includes 51 not out against the West Indies and 40 runs off 36 balls against Australia. Captain Bavuma has also really impressed with the willow and he is not far behind in the race for top South African batsman with a total of 91 runs in the tournament. Some of his best knocks were 46 runs off 36 balls against Sri Lanka and 31 not out against Bangladesh. With the ball it’s been a real mix for South Africa with everybody doing their little bit, but Dwayne Pretorius and Tabraiz Shamsi have been able to add a little something extra to the attack and played vital roles in South Africa’s victories in this competition. The former has a total of seven wickets in the tournament which includes two spells of 3/17 against Sri Lanka and the West Indies, while the latter has a total of six wickets and was really impressive against Sri Lanka. He also managed figures of 3/17 in his spell and this included two memorable caught and bowled dismissals.

Prediction

England have already secured top spot in the group and this really does tempt me to side with South Africa in this one since the English don’t have anything to play for. However, I don’t think England will want to risk killing their momentum ahead of the semi-finals and if Australia win the earlier game (which they most likely will) it’s going to deal a major blow to the Proteas’ motivation ahead of this match since they won’t be able to qualify.

There isn’t much value in backing England to win the match as favourites so I am instead going to go for a few top batsman and top bowler bets. With the match taking place on the Sharjah track I think the fast bowlers will be favoured more so I am going to have a crack at Dwayne Pretorius to be the top bowler for South Africa. He seems to have a real knack for picking up wickets in the second half of the innings with his wide deliveries that entice batsman to take risks.

Jos Buttler has really kicked into gear in the last couple of matches for his side with two massive innings and I have no problem backing him to be the top English batsman in this match. Picking the top South African batsman is a toss-up between Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, but since Markram got a duck against Bangladesh and had his bigger knocks earlier on in the tournament I will go for Bavuma who’s in form right now.
