The newly named DSTV Premiership gets going this weekend and we take a look at Saturday’s 6 fixtures from a betting angle.
Let’s start with a look at the outright betting where Mamelodi Sundowns are 16/10 favourites to defend their title ahead of Kaizer Chiefs 18/10, Orlando Pirates 15/4 and you can get 12/1 and better the balance.

KAIZER CHIEFS v MAMELODI SUNDOWNS – Click here to bet
What a fixture to start the season with Mamelodi Sundowns having just pipped Kaizer Chiefs to the Title last season which ended only a few weeks ago. There has been plenty of change in both camps though over the off-season (as short as it was) and last season each side had a victory over the other.
Both were in Cup action last weekend with Chiefs beating Maritzburg and Sundowns losing to Bloem Celtic.
Betting
Chiefs 2/1
Draw 39/20
Sundowns 31/20
Suggested Bet: Kaizer Chiefs win at 2/1
I think the changes at the top level of the Mamelodi Sundowns structure are going to affect them and they may get off to a slow start this season, Chiefs can take advantage of this.
BAROKA v MARITZBURG UNITED – Click here to bet
Baroka narrowly avoided relegation last season finishing 14th on the table and they take on a Maritzburg side that failed to win any of its last 5 games, but still managed to finish 7th.
Betting:
Baroka 22/10
Draw 2/1
Maritzburg United 13/10
Suggested Bet: The draw at 2/1
It is only Maritzburg’s defeat to Chiefs to go on as far as recent form goes, I am going to settle for the draw here in what should be a tightly contested match.
BLOEM CELTIC v GOLDEN ARROWS – Click here to bet
Celtic finished 8th on the log last season and they beat Sundowns in the MTN 8 Cup Quarter-Finals last week. They face a Golden Arrows side that took just 1 point from their last 5 matches towards the tail end of the previous season and ended up finishing 12th on the log.
Bloem Celtic won this fixture 5-0 last season.
Betting:
Bloem Celtic 5/4
Draw 19/10
Arrows 53/20
Suggested Bet: Over 2.5 goals at 16/10
These two sides can serve up goals although not on a consistent basis, but the 16/10 price is enough to tempt me.
CAPE TOWN CITY v CHIPPA UNITED – Click here to bet
Cape Town City finished last season with 3 out of 4 victories to end 6th on the log and they face Chippa United who won 2 of their last 5 ending up 11th, 8 points behind Cape Town City.
The last 5 meetings between these sides has delivered for under 2.5 goal backers.
Betting:
Cape Town City 19/20
Draw 21/10
Chippa United 67/20
Suggested Bet: Cape Town City win at 19/20
Cape Town City were disappointing last week losing to Orlando Pirates in the Cup and I am expecting them to have a strong League run and they can open up with 3 points here.
AMAZULU v ORLANDO PIRATES – Click here to bet
AmaZulu were 13th on the table last season and limped home with only 1 win in their last 5 starts. Pirates were fast finishing 3rd winning their last 3 games on the trot and Pirates also beat Cape Town City in the MTN 8 Cup last week.
This fixture finished goalless last season.
Betting:
AmaZulu 13/4
Draw 19/10
Pirates 21/20
Suggested Bet: Pirates win at 21/20
I have a strong fancy for Pirates this season and am happy to take anything above even money they win in this one.
SUPERSPORT UNITED v BLACK LEOPARDS – Click here to bet
SuperSport United finished 5th on the table with 3 wins in their last 5 matches last season. They were in action last week in the MTN 8 Cup beating Tshakhuma 3-2 on the road.
Black Leopards won 2 and lost 3 of their last 5 matches, but it was enough to stave off relegation and they finished 15th on the table.
Betting:
SuperSport United 7/10
Draw 23/10
Black Leopards 5/1
Suggested Bet: SuperSport United win at 7/10
I think SuperSport would have benefited from last weekend’s runout and can get their campaign off to a positive start.
