BettingDiaryWe take a look at some of the action that punters can bet on, on Thursday and also whet the appetite ahead of what will be a busy weekend.

CRICKET

We noted in our diaries earlier in the week how the draw continued to shorten for the second test between England and Australia and sure enough the first day’s play was totally rained out. The forecast does look better for day 2 though and the draw has actually drifted slightly from 8/10 to 17/20 with England 28/10 and Australia 3/1.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand resume in their 1st Test and New Zealand are currently the favourites at 5/4 with Sri Lanka 5/2 and the draw 2/1. There were only 68 overs possible in Day 1 and New Zealand got to 203 for 5 on what looked a tough batting wicket with Ross Taylor leading the way on an unbeaten 86.

GOLF

The Euro Tour resumes this week with the Czech Masters and South African, Eric van Rooyen is amongst the leaders in the betting at 16/1 with Bernd Wiesberger topping the boards at 14/1.

The Fedex Cup playoffs resume with the BMW Championship and Brooks Koepka is the 17/2 favourite with Mcilroy 9/1, Jon Rahm 11/1 and you can get 14/1 and better the balance. A man who is holding his form well with two runner-up finishes in his last 3 starts is Webb Simpson and we fancy his chances at 28/1 a win and 11/2 a top 5 finish.

TENNIS

The ATP Cincinnati Masters continues in the US and you won’t get rich backing Novak Djokovic to go through to the next round as he is priced at 1/50. There are of course other markets to bet on such as Total Games but the match which looks the better betting heat is the temperamental Nick Kyrgios against Karen Khachanov and we fancy the underdog Khachanov here at 23/20.

FOOTBALL

Varsity Cup football continues on Thursday and a look at the current log shows TUT sitting on 9 points with 3 wins from their 3 matches with UJ 3 points behind them in 2nd. There is betting on all 4 games and TUT are predictably short to beat UKZN who currently prop up the table with just a draw and 2 defeats in their opening 3 games.

CUT v UFS is one of two televised games and bookies cannot separate the sides as they are both on offer at 15/10 with the draw at 22/10 and we think the draw is a big runner here.

HORSE RACING

Local Horse Racing takes place at the Vaal with the first race off at 12h10 and the 9th and final race scheduled for 17h05. Our fancy comes in the 6th race, run over 1200 metres where the No. 4 horse, Certifiable is currently priced at 5/1 a win and 7/8 a Top 3 finish.

RUGBY

In our look ahead to the weekend we focus on South Africa v Argentina where the handicap has come in slightly from just over 20 points to (-19.5) South Africa on the back of team news. A tricky thing for punters here is that while South Africa are clearly not fielding a first team, Argentina are also not at full strength and perhaps the Exotic Markets will be the way to play this.
