BettingDiaryThis week we focus on the European Tour for our golf betting fix where a number of the world’s top players gather in Abu Dhabi for the opening Rolex series event.

This will be the first event of the European 2021 Tour and if past years is anything to go by we can expect plenty of birdies. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club has generous fairways and large greens and being a desert course there is plenty of sand about but water is also in play on a number of holes.

Rory Mcilroy heads the star studded line-up and at the time of writing is priced at 6/1 with Justin Thomas, who has been in action over in Hawaii, 13/2 second favourite and you can get 14/1 and better the balance.

Past Winners

2020 – Lee Westwood -19

2019 – Shane Lowry -18

2018 – Tommy Fleetwood -22

2017 – Tommy Fleetwood -17

2016 – Rickie Fowler -16

SELECTIONS

Justin Thomas each way at 13/2

It was a straight choice between Thomas and Rory and I am giving the American the edge on the basis of his form so far this year which has seen him finish 3rd in the season opener on the PGA Tour. The danger is that Thomas does not have any course form, but given the way he is playing at the moment I am sure he will adapt to this layout very quickly.

Tommy Fleetwood each way at 14/1

Fleetwood finished last season strongly, but it is course form that attracts me this week and he has had a runner-up finish and 2 victories in his last 4 starts here. When he doesn’t contend he does bomb out quite badly with a couple of missed cuts and a Top 50 in the last 6 years, but I am happy to have this two-time winner on side this week

Christiaan Bezuidenhout each way at 33/1

The South African was in cracking form on the Sunshine tour with back-to-back victories and he is such an improved player I am going to ignore the course form which includes a missed cut and a Top 60 finish last year. If Bezuidenhout can bring his end of 2020 game to the party he can contend this week.

Thomas Pieters each way at 40/1

Pieters is my biggest price of the week and after bursting on to the scene a few years ago he has been fairly quiet of late although he did finish the 2020 season in reasonable form. If he is to burst into life then it could well be at this track where he has 3 Top 5 finishes in the last 6 years and those include a runner-up finish 5 years ago.
