BettingDiaryThe PGA National Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida plays host to this weeks PGA Tour event, The Honda Classic. We take a look at the tournament from a betting angle.

The Champions Course plays to a par 70 and is a true test of golf with the winning score often below (-10) and last years score of -12 from triple figure odds winner Matt Jones was the lowest since Rickie Fowler won in 2017.

Length off the tee is certainly an advantage, but with trouble lurking all around the course, mainly in the form of bunkers, accuracy is very important.

2020 Champion Sungjae Im tops the betting boards at 12/1 ahead of Daniel Berger at 15/1 and Joaquin Niemann (18/1) the only other player under 20/1.

SELECTIONS:

Sungjae Im each way at 12/1

Im followed up his victory in 2020 with a Top 10 finish last year and in a field that lacks a few of the bigger name players I think he can build on some solid recent form which includes 2 Top 10’s and a Top 15 in his last 5 starts.

Joaquin Niemann each way at 18/1

You certainly can’t argue with Niemann’s current form and he comes in here on the back of an impressive victory last week. It was his third successive Top 10 finish and although his course form is average with 1 missed cut and a best finish of 25th in the last 3 years, that 25th did occur last year suggesting he is getting the hang of the course and the way he is playing it is hard to ignore him this week.

Ryan Palmer each way at 60/1

Palmer is a player who has had some good course form as has had two Top 5 finishes here in the last 7 years, the last of those came 2 years ago. Last year he followed that performance up with a solid Top 20. If there is a concern about Palmer it is his recent form, which has seen him miss two cuts in a row, but prior to that he had a Top 20 and a Top 15 so I am hoping that back at a course which he clearly loves he will bounce back to his best form.

Brendan Steele each way at 100/1

I am not basing this selection on current form as he has missed his last 4 cuts, but some players blow hot and cold and Steele tends to be one of them and he certainly loves this course and he is coming off 2 consecutive Top 5 finishes including a 3rd place last year. He has only missed 1 cut here in his last 9 attempts and has also bagged 3 other Top 15 finishes in that time.

C.T. Pan each way at 70/1

I am going to throw Pan into the mix as I stumbled upon him while looking at Steele’s form figures. Pan finished tie with Steele last year in 3rd place in this event. What interests me is that he bounced back from some really poor form including a couple of missed cuts with a Top 10 finish last week.
