BettingDiaryThe Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio plays host to this weeks PGA Tour event, The Valero Texas Open and we look to build the bank roll ahead of the upcoming US Masters.

The course plays to a par 72 and is designed by Greg Norman. It is a challenging test of golf and if you do stray from the fairway you can find big trouble in the rough or in any of the other hazards scattered around the course. The wind can also get up here and be a factor while length off the tee is certainly not a disadvantage, we are looking for someone who can find the fairways and position their balls well on the multi-tiered greens this week.

Dustin Johnson heads the betting at 7/1 ahead of Jordan Spieth who is showing welcome signs of returning to form at 14/1. Tony Finau is 18/1 along with Scottie Scheffler who performed so well at the Matchplay last week, you can get 22/1 and better the balance at the time of writing.

SELECTIONS:

Jordan Spieth each way at 14/1

Spieth will certainly have one eye on the US Masters taking place next week, but although he has shown a return to form he really needs a victory to truly boost his confidence. Spieth has been in excellent form and did make the last 16 of the Matchplay last week, but prior to that had 3 top 5 finishes in 5 starts. You have to go back a while, but he also had a runner-up finish here in 2015 and a 10th place in 2014 and with his game in such good shape I think it is just a matter of time before he gets over the line.

Ryan Palmer each way at 33/1

The first thing that catches the eye about Ryan Palmer is his course form, although having said that I must point out that he has missed the cut two years in a row. Prior to that though he was superb with 3 successive Top 10’s and he has been in good form in 2021 with a couple of Top 5 finishes to his credit. In a fairly weak field I fancy a strong showing from Palmer this week.

Tony Finau each way at 18/1

The problem with Finau is he just doesn’t win often enough and he had an incredible three runner-up finishes in a row a few weeks back and in fact four Top 5’s in a row. He also has course form with a Top 3 finish here in 2017 and I think this is just the sort of field where he could get over the line.

Ryan Moore each way at 60/1

After picking 3 players all towards the top of the betting boards I have to go further down for my final selection and Ryan Moore gets the tick mark. I am basing this almost purely on course form where he has three Top 10’s in four starts including a 3rd place finish when this event was last held in 2019. If he is going to bounce back to form then this will be as likely a place as any for him to do it.
